Batteries for the Deuce

Anyone have a suggestion on where to buy batteries? Or even if I should. Could I get away with taking the 2 good optima's I have and putting them in?

Is it possible to jump start a deuce with a 12v battery? I'm thinking the batteries are OK and I hate to waste $$ but I need to get it started on my own. :(

After doing a search I found that it takes a 6TL battery. This must be the odd offset kind right?

I also found this cool adapter to be able to use an Optima if you wanted.

only $9 http://www.powerstridebattery.com/store/getproductframe.cfm?category=OPTIMA

Also I read in this thread: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=188&SearchTerms=jump,start

That the plug on the cab of my truck is a NATO style because it's a single pin. Does that have any significance as to where the truck has been or actually seen action overseas?

Here's a few pics of what is in it currently.

Thank you for any help or info you have to offer. I completely new to this 24v stuff and didn't turn up anything in the search.

MattS!

The batteries that are in there now are what I use!

Interstate is a good battery, and if you check with the local distributer, you may be able to get BLEMS for a whole lot less!

The BLEMS are ok internally!

6TL batteries tolerate rebuilding well. They have waterproof vents and heavy plates. I use $29.00 specials in my truck. I have a half dozen 6TLs to rebuild and I'll use them when I'm finished with them but if all you are doing is driving the truck, basic batteries will work. You won't be able to jump start it with one battery but you could with two. I've jumped them with 2 sets of cables and 2 vehicles before.

We just have 2 normal 12V automotive batteries in ours, you need to stick some wood blocks in the battery box to "Shim" them up to account for the fact they're smaller in dimension than the ones that were originaly in it

We were lucky that when we needed a jump the first time the truck died, the one battery was brand new, so it, plus a normal jump from a car was enough to get it going, but in normal circumstances, you'll need 2 of everything, two battery chargers or two good batteries w/ cables to jump a dead deuce

You don't happen to have a number off them do you? Or dimensions? They can't figure out what battery it is without one or the other. And of course I can't get back onto base before I need to pick the truck up Monday am.

If I were to just jump the truck I'm assuming I put one set of cables to each battery just like normal? I'd hate to ruin $200 worth of batteries!

Thanks!

The batteries are 6TN or 6TL batteries. A competent battery shop should be able to ID this. If not, ask for green batteries. As far as jumping you can do this two ways. You can use 2 sets of cables and jump each batteries or you can take the two batteries and hook them together in series and use one set of cables. I would suggest just taking 2 car batteries and swapping them into the truck. That way if you should have to shut it down or stall it, you can light it back up. Take some small pieces of 2x4 and 4x4 to shim the car batteries apart. That gets you off base and home with little fuss then you can deal with the 6TL batteries.

Kenneth, thanks for the info. I'm going to just swap the batteries and deal with the others later. But it's nice to have the jumping procedure in my head for future reference!

No problem man. The Gov't even has stickers on some of the battery boxes explaining the procedure!

as far as the slave receptical goes, that doesnt signify any over seas duty. All except one of my trucks had the Nato style. The one that didnt had to have a small adapter on the end of the slave cables, a PITA to do but it just hadnt been updated yet. my truck (m816) had both.
