GAA Grease

Got the Lubrication Order off RDM's CD today (Thanks RDM - your million is in the mail...). Lots of places to use GAA but no GAA! Does anyone know of an acceptable substitute for GAA? Most grease is formulated with Molybdium or Lithium and the two can't be mixed. So any ideas as to what GAA is? Or anybody got a copy of MIL-G-10924!

Seems I've answered my own question - Did a Google search on 'MIL-G-10924' and determined it was Lithium based and basically a generic NLGI-2 grease. Which fits with what MVTrucker said about 'blue' grease. WWW.lubeandtune.com.au/html/lubekey.htm has a chart "Key To Lubricants which addresses some of this which also points MIL-L-2105 gear lube to GL-4 and MIL-L-2105B/C/D/E to GL-5 ! Seems to me like everyone say use GL-1 only. Who's right?

We were discussing this exact point on the M715Zone today. I found the same page you did, lol. We were disussing what to use in the closed knuckles of out front Dana 60s. Appearantly, a lot of typical wheel bearing grease conforms to the listed NGLI-2 (grade 2) and Chrysler MS-3701. Time to go and start reading grease cans at the parts store. I myself happen to have several cases of Mopar Multimileage Grease (P/N 2525035) that will work.

I just did my whole truck with Valvoline Moly Fortified Durablend Synthetic - NLGI #2 GC-LB Lithium grease...And no problems as of yet.. Hope this is OK
I saw in the tips section that if your steering box is leaking to use grease in it as a alternative to fixing the hard to replace seal...
Any thoughts on on the steering box solution?
Thanks

Have been searching here and on the web for a specification for GAA that will tell me what it is. Found out more than I thought I wanted to know about greases, including many dire warnings from grease manufacturers not to mix grease types, but nowhere can I find what base and composition GAA is. Is it a lithium type as was said above and if so, which lithium????? A grease compatibility chart http://www.mindconnection.com/library/handyman/greasecompat.htm that tells what greases you can mix shows several types of lithium greases. Also, some 'grease' posts here seem to say that it is not a lithium base grease.... Anyone have the official info?

BTW - I did find two helpful general info sites on grease certifications http://www.nlgi.com/certification.htm and http://www.usace.army.mil/publications/eng-manuals/em1110-2-1424/c-5.pdf which explain the NLGI "number" and the ASTM classification, neither of which have anything to do with what the grease is made of or it's compatibility with another grease.

Will be a lot better than the thousands of M880s which were shipped with no oil in the steering boxes..!!

$55 for a 35# (5 gallon) pail seems high. Papercu may have some left. I've been getting my GAA from him. I have 2 1/2 35# pails left. Should be enough for about 10 or 15 years.

If you spend a lot of time hunting around, you CAN find GL-1. But don't bother. A GL-5 gear oil meeting the MT-1 spec is an acceptable substitute and provide better lubrication properties. I use Valvoline 85W-140 gear oil, GL-5 and meets MT-1. I get it at Wally World, but any GL-5 which STATES ON THE LABEL that it meets MT-1 will work.

The issue has to do with certain advanced (post GL-1 gear oils) which may damage the type of synchronizers used in the Deuce tranny. This issue is only applicable to the tranny and transfer case which are synchronized, I have not heard of any incompatibilities with modern gear oils in the axles.BUT, I'd pick only one GO and use it everywhere, rather than try and remember which GO goes where. However, the jury is still out regarding synthetic gear oils. Some SS members swear by synthetics, but just as many swear AT synthetics. This may be brand related, but until convincing evidence appears to change my mind, I'll stick with petroleum based GO.

For more info on the synchronizer issue, see:

Does anyone have the full text of the mil spec for GAA? It will spell out exactly what it is made of... Then I can (hopefully) get the major grease manufacturers to say what is equal and what is or is not compatible....

Thanks

I spoke with Len Wise at Dumont Specialty. He re-packs and is a distributor for military grease. The BASE grease for GAA is "#2 lithium complex grease". #2 lithium complex grease off a store shelf is not GAA, UNLESS the container states that it meets specs for MIL-C-10924. There are a multitude of addtitives added to the BASE grease to make it GAA. It is NOT a generic grease.

Current prices at Dumont are $10.60 per pound. Cartriges are $19.84 ea, 10 to a case, 40 to a master case. Around $372.00 for a 5 gallon pail.

I sell GAA on my website for $11.00 per 6.5 pound can and $55.00 per 35 pound pail plus $7.00 out of box charge on the pail. Limited amounts of pails are left.

Manufacturers include Summit, Anderol/Royco and Sowesco - olathe.

Try looking here.

This has the latest spec and the QPL. This is also a really good source for other mil specs.
