Production has resumed on SSBs after a redesign of the frame to make it stronger and easier to assemble. In-stock versions ready to finish and ship are available in mil-spec desert tan and flat black. One tan civilian sailcloth (Hummer H1 material) also available. Other colors and materials can be made to order.
Production time is roughly one week after your deposit is received.
Below are some examples of kits in production and in the wild.
Materials are sourced from Made In USA to the extent possible (100% is possible with some restrictions on color choices). All kits are made by me in Quantico, Virginia. For those familiar with Blue Ox Tops in Florida, I use many of the same materials as Mr. Welch (we are collaborators).
"Camo" tops are delivered to you in OD Green, or black if you prefer, and YOU paint to match so that the colors are correct for your own particular vehicle.
Here is a now very long thread about how these kits came to be: https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/hmmwv-4-man-soft-slant-back-feedback-and-discussion.176620/
Pricing and recent R&D are detailed on the FaceBook page in my signature. Short list on prices: tan/green medium weight PVC kit = $1400 plus S&H, black HD PVC = $1500, sailcloth in stock $1500, other colors or exotic materials = call for estimate.
Shipping is usually by UPS. Prices have gone UP, sorry to say. I have all the discounts I can leverage with UPS and do not charge packaging fees. Shipping is usually between $80-120.
Kits arrive ready to assemble. All you need is a flat blade screwdriver and a 5mm hex wrench.
Current stock is the Mk2 frame, made from 3/4" steel tubing and held with a combination of bolted clamps and screw fittings. Tubing is covered in foam to cushion the cover.
I also make rear curtains when requested. I can do standard, oversize window and/or zippered center. I have one on my HMMWV and keep the center unzipped and rolled up mostly, but like being able to drop it to isolate the bed from the crew compartment.
A new frame design is being worked on that has the humped rear to resemble military hard slantbacks. This is not yet ready for sale as I need to see how it weathers and performs.
If you have an older SSB cover and want a new frame, the Mk2 frames are backwards compatible. The new Mk3 frame and cover will be unique products moving forward.
