homemade flange question

hello all, Alex sent me down this flange to use as a pattern for my homemade front disconnects.

<img src="http://www.buschandbusch.com/zzflange.jpg" border="0">

The question I had was what is the lip for, and is it OK to not duplicate it? I assume so, but since I don't have a front end here to study and ahve never seen one with the flange off I want to make double sure. It appears to maybe seat inside the rim and helps seal grease in?
If I need the lip I was going to try to find some 4 3/4 OD pipe and weld it in the flange.
Also, this thing doesn't support any way or handle any load when it is not connected to the axle right? I mean, 1/2" plate like the stock one seems like overkill <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_approve.gif" alt="Approve">

and also, the cone shape of it is not necessary right? Did they just do that for looks? I was just going to do it the same way Trango did his.
thanks!

thanks!

The lip is for centering and is not needed, and the cone shape is just for looks.

By the way, I would be open to sending someone my hubs as partial payment on a set of selectros. ;)
