When passing through IL with a deuce with no trailer and rear cover on, do you stop at weigh stations? The signs say anything over 8 tons must stop. The deuce is just under that. Just curious if anyone has been stopped for not stopping and what they are looking for? Any other probs? I will also probably have the back loaded (but well under the 24K) so I want to know if its an issue pulling in or if I should just swing around the bottom of IL when we go to WY.
thanks,
Jim

When I drove across I70 to Chester Ill to help 54reo work on Opcom's 8109, I didn't pull in any weight stations, didn't get stopped. Another time I drove out there with two huge aluminum structures in the back of the deuce and didn't get stopped.

The DOT inspectors here say, if your not in the act of commerce(operating for hire), you do not need to stop at an inspection station.

I've heard a lot of different things on this topic, here in MN if the sign says "all trucks over 10,000 lbs must stop" then I stop. It doesn't say if you are making money or not you must stop. And the weight they put on the sign is what your truck is rated for not how much it weighs empty so a deuce should stop at all scales according to the letter of the law, they might not chase you down because they might assume you are military. One confusing point between here and say Iowa is if you are pulling a trailer with something like a 3/4 ton PU like I do. My truck is rated at 9200 GVW and my trailer is 21,000, in MN I must stop at any scale loaded or empty because they go by the combined GVW and Iowa I don't need to stop because they only go by the GVW of the pulling truck. The only rigs that don't need to stop are RV's, they get all the breaks.

I read the law about "trucks must stop" and since I register my deuce as historic I am not really a truck. MY weight is set and will not change, and I am not required to have a heavy vehicle inspection. I do not need a CDL. I am in NY and it is a very PITA state in many regs and things and it depends a lot on where you are.

I would say , drive through. Your load is covered and you are operating a military vehicle which looks very much like it was when it came out form the service. My guess is that on first glance, you will look like a military truck going about its business. If you get stopped, plead the "Hey, I am not in business and just taking stuff to my place in WY" and see how it goes.

Just my two cents.

I have owned several deuces over the last 15 or so years, and have never pulled into one of those state weight stations- I have zipped by several dozen of weight stations and have not been pulled over for failure to pull into one.

I never stop just look straight ahead and go all the trucks Ive driven home I have never ran them through a weigh station and was never stopped. Most of our cops are hiding behind the toll booths checking for seatbelt violaters going for the easy money anyways.
