Inspecting items not yet up for bid.

I would suggest to GL that they strongly suggest to the individual locations to be more accommodating on allowing inspection of items that might not be up for bid quite yet, but are listed.

I will often go to a location far from my home to inspect an item, and it is hit-or-miss if the guys will allow me to inspect some other items I am watching, but are not up yet for bid. I usually walk away from bidding on these items as it just pisses me off that I am already there after driving hours, and they won’t allow me to see them. This was before the fuel price increases too, so there is no chance I will make a second trip even for an item I want just because a GL employee could not be bothered.

There is a very good chance the reason the GL is not letting you look at it yet, is because they do not own it. When I went to get one of my M35s at Camp Lejeune, there were alot of M35s in the lot. A very nice GL employee told me I could look at the ones that were tagged with a red sticker, as they were the ones GL owned and would be going up for bids, the rest were still goverment owned at that time.

Thanks for pointing that fine point out. I was refering mostly to items already listed on the site, but that are not for bid yet. I tweaked my suggestion a bit to help clarify. I know all about the ownership thing though.

Frank,

Please check out rule #8.

The less clutter we have the easier it is to get a response from the GL rep.
Please have "member to member communication" in the other non GL sections.

Thanks!

This is interesting. I have never heard of them segregating lots, letting you look at some and not others, even though they're already posted to the website. If you have detailed info, like the dates, names, sale and lot numbers, etc, let me know.

Well my GL travels have diminished over the last two years, but most of the problem came while visiting the Norfolk, Va. location. I would go there with printed out descriptions of many items I would want to see from the site. . When wanting to see these items I would get reactions all over the spectrum. Sometimes if I made a fuss over it I would get a chance to see the items if a supervisor heard. I am not comdemning this site though as the people there were often very helpful.

I might be able to be more detailed when I get a chance to go through my records, but it was probably a year ago when I was purchasing several lots of axles, shipping containers, and small crated motors.

I can't remember any other locations off-hand where this happened, but the Norfolk location is exceptionally strict on escorting. Most sites keep an eye, but don't want to be attached at the hip. That more casual inspection makes it much easier to find a random lot you want to inspect, and makes this mostly a non-issue at these other sites.

There are a lot of differences from location to location. It is amazing how different every location is in handling things like inspection, pick up time (some only allow pickup ONE day a week), phone calls, the list is amazing, from A-Z things are handled different from location to location.

Which gets me to postings, wow, from only saying, M-1008 with two photos to 20 photos discribing what parts are missing from the engine, photos of every rust spot, the depth of the tire tread... I wish they would get everyone on the same page with that info.

I agree with Melvinitis about different Locations. I got to Stout field a day early and while Scouting the place, I got a call from" Man in gharge", and he said the item was ready, and if I wanted it today, it was fine. I was 1/8 mile from the gate, and we got all hoocked up and off we went back Home!! He did allow me to look at the Good Stuff, comming up for bid. Phil

The places I've been you can look at anything that is already GL property, whether it is in a catalog yet or not. The only stuff I have been told to stay away from were the trucks/trailers that were not GL property yet. I think this echoes what has been said previously.
