Is there supposed to be a gasket or O-ring there? I'm not sure if mine has one or not now that you mention that. Doesn't it just have thread sealant on it?

no, dont use sealent, to much of a chance of it getting into the B/C and the brakes and pluging something up

My new one came with a copper washer on it..... I'd go that route, maybe NAPA or a plumbing supply would have one big enough.

I installed a brake fluid resevoir on my firewall and wanted to make sure the m/c cap did not leak being now it had some head pressure on it so I went to plumbing section of my hardware store and bought 2, 1 1/4" slip gaskets that go on a sinks p-trap., I took one of the gaskets and let it ( and a piece of 1/4" fuel hose) soak in silicone fluid for 3 months while I redid my deuce to make sure it was compatible and it works fine no leaks to date and its been about 2 months since I installed the resevoir, Heck I still have that ( other) gasket soaking in fluid now

I have been searching for a copper washer/gasket but have not had any luck as yet. I was sure McMaster Carr would have one but that is the first time they have failed me.

If the sealing surfaces on the cap & master cylinder are reasonably smooth, a simple "o" ring works fine.
I think the original type copper gaskets are available at NAPA.
