Pre Production 3-53

Here is a rare photograph that I have in my book of a pre production 3-53 Detroit diesel engine for the Gama Goat. Can you spot the one item that is different from the production engine ?

Or is that a hydraulic reservoir? Unlike mine it probably runs

NDT nailed it, a remote oil filter which sure would make changing the filter easier, leave it to the military to change it to make it harder.

Cheaper i bet, thats usually the motivation.
