Do I have to open the hood in order to remove the grille? I am hoping that the bolts holding it on come off without opening it. The hood on the M139 looks heavy and I doubt I can lift it myself.
I believe you do. Best way to do it if you aren't very strong is to hook a ratchet strap, perhaps a 4" strap and slip it under the front lip on the hood. run it up over the cab and in the bed or back. and pull with your strength or just use the ratchet on the strap to move it up. Using your foot against the back of the cab gives you good leverage. I don't remember them being that heavy though. Maybe because the hood on mine was always up. :/
Advice: You need to be able to open it, or have a friend who can, if not for this but for maintenance. You need to be able to check the oil, coolant level, etc. at regular intervals. The hood on the M139 is no heavier than any other M series 5 ton.
