have a rubber boot on an axle that is original to the vehicle and would be more than likely hard to source another if it fails. it is still nice and soft but has a few cracks in it that are not all the way through the boot. this boot is used to keep oil in the cv joint and water and dirt out and does not flex too much. would a good coat of silicon work or is there a better way to preserve it?

Ive had success using liquid silicone for putting life back into rubber/plastic pieces. I soaked the parts in a zip lock bag.
For parts still installed try the better foaming tire dressing. Spray and cover it with a good layer of foam and let it soak in
and absorb. Also put it on a new sponge to wipe stuff down.
