The Gov Loc GM rear axle has had some bad reputation. Gov Loc is another design in the "locking rear differential" world. My experience with the Gov Loc rear has been "bad". I've had trouble with reliability and breakdown. The Gov Locs "did work", before they eventually broke. I wouldn't remove the axle just because it had a Gov Loc in it. I would however be prepared to replace it if it broke down.

My old truck used to have that gov-lock axle in it. I hacked out the front fenders and put some 33x12.50 tires on the truck. We used to do burn out competitions with the truck and it worked flawlessly. It lit both tires up every time and never unhooked side to side. It worked very well for me offroad as well. I never had a single problem with it, and I was very hard on it I flat out abused it. I did change the fluid in it quite regularly and always ran synthetic fluid. From what I have heard though not many people have had much luck with the gov-lock rear ends. I wouldn't mind haveing another one.

Sodbusters truck would do cookies on dry pavement and always have both rear tires turnin' (It was hard to see the truck through the tire smoke sometimes) It was wicked for a stock rearend. If he didn't break it, then they have to be tough.
