What did they do to this masterpiece?

Hey all,

New owner of a deuce. Wanted to get some info on something the previous owner let me in on....

Apparently the ilitaryndid a mass service update to deuces, and installed a different motor in mine specifically in the 90's. Part of this impacted the vehicle by taking away its multifuel capabilities - a trade off to make it more efficient on pure diesel.

I can't remember what he called it so I haven't had Lincoln finding anything on the forum regarding it.

I wanted to know about the following from all th experts out there:
- regarding fuel additives, many have suggested 2 stroke motor oil to help aid lubrication given low sulfur content in today's Deisel fuels. Is this still safe given the changes?
- regarding a SHTF scenario where I could stop at jiffy lubes to fuel up, how could I get her back to a multi fuel burning masterpiece on the fly?

Its still a multifuel, he was mistaken, unless they put a different motor in.

Do you have a m35a2 or m35a3? What brand does the engine plate say?

I bet its the FDC bypass, lots of folks make that mistake.

If it has an automatic it is an A3 with a Splatterpiller motor in it.....no multi-fuel for you if that's the case.......that and getting bent over the parts counter when it needs something or breaks.

Gimpy - the FDC bypass rings a bell. I will look at the engine data plate when I get to it his week, but I also know that it has a small tag on the inside of the drivers side door jam denoting the service update in 1990.

It's really a shame that this truck was so molested over the years. Originally came with a winch, and fording kit. Still has he drop side bed and machine gun mount. I understand these combined to make it really rare and "fully loaded"

The tag in the door jamb (usually) just means it had seat belts added.

The fording kit isn't THAT rare, my USMC M109 has it. The COMPLETE gun ring is $$$ though.

A complete fording kit is pretty rare. The in cab stuff isn't.

There is a fuel additive study available on www.jatonkam35s.com on the home page that goes into the various fuel additives and their benefits or not. All the TMs are there in the deuce section including several pertaining to injector pumps, turbochargers, transmissions and transfer cases as well as the winches on deuces. Lst count was over 60 different documents in the deuce section.

The reason that we need to add a lubricant to our fuel is because the process of removing the sulphur from diesel also destroys the lubricative properties. Initial testing on the new ULSD fuel before it was required nationwide had modern fleets using the fuel and it was destroying modern injector pumps. This was before they (fuel engineers) had started adding any lubricant to the fuel.

Imagine a new IP with the spaceage materials inside versus our old mechanical rotary IPs? The amount they added to the fuel was enough to protect the new pumps but not the old ones.

You mentioned 2 stroke motor oil as a fuel addative.I have been adding about a1/2 quart of it per tank to all my diesel equipment and trucks for years and have never had a fuel system problem,and I run alot of old iron in some of the worst environments in the world.In winter our gas stations switch to winter diesel,dry as heck,and on top of that there mixing in biodiesel,my machines need all the lube they can get.I also add dextron tranny fluid as it is high in detergent and helps keep the fuel system clean,I was recommended this by my dealer when I bought my 04 cummins 1 ton.Alot of equipment guys out here do the same with good results.I don't know if i'de recomend it for newer diesels though.Because of all the new pollution control cadellitics are plugging up after 10 mins. of idling.Sometimes I add diesel conditioner in ambient temperatures above and below 0 celceous to dissipate condensation in the tank.Like I said, I've never had a fuel issue in any of my diesels in years scince doing this.I'm also a firm believer in 100 percent synthetic oil for everything,especially small engines.I'f anybody has any constructive criticism i'm all ears.

I avoid transmission fluid as it has "friction enhancers" in it which reduce the overall lubricity of the oil.

If you read the article on diesel fuel at Jatonka you will see that they cover pretty much all of the additives you can think of as well as some you have not heard of. While one study does not a doctrine make, what is presented makes sense and I believe offers some good advice on how to protect your older IPs.

Without heading into forbidden territory regarding content, I will close by saying I miss the good old days.
