You can wipe them off to inspect the condition of the rollers and the cage and feel for looseness with out washing. If the grease is that hard, old that you can't see the rollers or feel for play than maybe you do need to wash it out.
I also wipe old grease out of the hub and wipe new grease in. More than one way to skin a cat for sure. Some of the schools Ive been to said do not wash. 30 years of packing and inpspecting truck and trailer bearings havent had one fail yet.. [knocking on wood] LOL

Thats why i do a final rinse in brake cleaner and blow dry with compressed air! Ends up clean and dry! Ready for the application of new grease!!

Nothing wrong with your way of doing it, just not really needed. Also you know about not spining bearings with air of course. Can not only fly apart but cause damamge to dry rollers. If you must blow out, blow straight through the cage

I'll have my bearings packed before you and ill be sitting on the porch drinking beer. :p
Serioulsy, to each their own.

I wipe the beraings clean with rag, then when packing wipe off the old crap that comes out, rotate bearing cage, so rollers turn and pack some more untill clean new grease comes out..All done!!

I use low air pressure and yes i know about the springs! Lol

good you use low air, but dont dont know what you mean about springs?? I meant spinning the bearing with air.

And Ive packed them for a living for a lifetime, so pretty confident it works.
great debate though ...:D. We all learn alot from sharing ideas and experiences, so all good. Ive been working on trucks as a living for 30+years and learn something new everyday.
