I found a m17a/MTQ truck today, 1952 REO gasser/ complete but not run in 2 years. How rare is this truck and is it worth saving? Can any one tell me what the revolving platform is for on top of this thing?

This makes 4-5 survivors that I am aware of - one that I own, one I am trying to buy, one in Wisconsin, and I seem to remember seeing photos of one in Europe.

And this is with my somewhat agressive looking for them. So, yep, they are rare - but they don't seem to be valuable. The one I own now is missing a lot of parts, and has a lot of rust damage - yet I sat out to restore it.

The revolving platform is to do telephone line repair work from. Sort of like today's bucket truck, but simpler. Pull up next to the pole, swing the platform out and suddenly you are standing next to it.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,
David Doyle

Clinto - JD's is a V18A/MTQ - the companion polesetter truck. This is a V17A/MTQ:

HTH,
David

Pix of these trucks in service are scarce too. I like this one - note the non-regulation positioning of the bridge weight classification disk on the door.

Well, you guys weren't kidding about the OD iron bug having a bad bite! I bought the truck last night, but I have to get it in two weeks. Can't get the trucking linrd out until then. I will get pics as soon as I can. Thanks to all for the info. David, you have been a great help!

Awesome! Good score. Is it complete with all the 'stuff'? The derrick poles? The way they block the driver's door when stowed probably makes them the first part of the truck that gets canned...

The derrick poles, or half of them at least, are there. They have been cut down in the past. The top doors over the bed are missing as well. I will get pics up as soon as I can, but it may be a week or two as I have to leave on a business trip for awhile.
