My Class V Receiver Hitch for M35A2

Ok so I started my first project for my deuce before I pick it up in February.

had a slow day at work today so I grabbed some scrap steel laying around and made a class V hitch.

Took 1/4" steel plate and bent it in the press, then cut it into 4 individual pieces on the bandsaw. I then took a 33.5" piece of 1/4" wall 2"x4" and welded the ends to it. Then took a 3"x3" tube and ground the weld seam out of the inside and drill the 5/8" pin holes on the dril press and welded to the bottom. Then took 2 pieces of 2"x2"x1/4" angle iron and reinforced the 3" tube. Then I welded on the safety latch brackets. I still have to drill the holes to mount it to the frame and the holes for the safety chain hooks. Overall I'm quite happy with the way it turned out. I kinda copied my bosses f-350 class V hitch and this is built way overkill compared to his Reese hitch. The thickness on his was 3/16" and had no gussets in the corners like mine and only attached with 6 bolts, I'm goin to attach mine with 10- 1/"2 bolts. Was welded up using .045" metalloy Hobart wire. And yes I'm a certified welder and have been for a few years in 2g 4g and 6g positions.

Nice work

It us nice when you gave a boss that lets you practice when it is slow.

When I installed mine we used six 5/8" frame bolts instead of the 1/2" bolts that came with the hitch.

I put a Curt hutch on my M923, I think it had 8 1/2" grade 8 bolts.

Nice welding and work. I used to be able to weld well but it is like any skill, use it or lose it. What did you use?

I have a lincoln 140 amp mig at home I swap back and forth between flux core and bare wire. I used a miller delta weld 450 amp welder at work with metal core wire. It's like flux core but instead of flux I the inside of wire it is a powder, and when you weld it runs like bare wire but is much stronger and faster cause it has a higher deposition rate cause of the powder alloy. Runs very clean above 27v and 375 to 400 wire speed. I'm certified up to 1" in flat horizontal vertical and over head in game and FCAW welding processes.

to me welding is like riding a bike, you never forget. I'm a supervisor so I don't weld much I love when new guys come in and run their mouths abou me never welding so I usually shut them up cause I can run circles around them, hence why I'm a supervisor.

I can weld aluminum and steel mig or tig I'm not the best but I'm pretty **** good.

Lincoln, and the other manufacturers, has changed the numbers on the machines. The old machines were numbered based on the duty cycle and the new machines are max.

Flux core is a good wire, I use a lot of it, but it has a fair amount of splatter.

I do not weld enough to be able to lay the picture perfect beads that I want, but they are good clean and structurally sound, just not perfect.

I have found that if you have a welder in the shop you will use it.

We use flux core on the frames we build, I find it runs very clean no spatter whatsoever just the slag you have to chop off, but it is much stronger then a bare wire

I have an old powcon power supply I will use with the cobramatic. It has pulse settings on it too. Its amazing what you can find on craigslist for cheap.

Were you posting pics from a phone? A lot of my pics post sideways on the other forums when I post from my phone.

Any chance you could find out the wire? It should have a designation like "er70s-6".

Nice looking work, and a killer shop (I'm liking the welding tables).

If I ever get to a weld, it's maybe once or twice a year (if that). So I just work off a portable oxy-acetylene kit I have. It's handy for a variety of purposes (the old "fire wrench" among other things).

But maybe I'm missing something, Lieutenant Dan; and it seems like you would know. Because you clearly know what you're doing. Safety's always an issue of course, but I'd value your opinion. You got a minute to respond?

-Is there any real good reason to switch away from oxy-acetylene if the use is real random and occasional?

Very nice layout and process .Very nicely done . Many years ago , I was a Helper in a steel FAB shop , man that was nice , learned a lot and as a plus , if I needed any type of Metal for my fab side job all I had to do was order it up . I have a Harris Gas setup , and Hobart Mig and AC/DC stick welder's . I am a FAIR welder , but am in awe of a good bead . Have a Nephew who is NUC certified , works at Browns Ferry in Alabama , man you guys can put some beads down , cool .
