Using Spacers on wheels?

I currently am looking at two options for my trailer when it comes to the axle.

Getting a 3500 lb 3" diameter axle with 5 on 5 hubs to match the wheels on my truck.

or

Getting the 5200 lb axle with 6 lugs not sure on measurement, and using 6 lug to 5 lug spacers to allow it to match the wheels for now. This option, would allow me at a later date (Should I get a 2500 series Suburban) to use 6 lug to 8 lug spacers thus being able to still use the same size wheels as the vehicle.

Just to be sure I am understanding this correctly... Getting the 5200 lb axle does give me more of a weight limit correct?

It would help if you told us what trailer you have.

I would avaid spacers if you can.

No matter what axle you have, the trailer frame and hitch or tires may limit your CGVW.

Sorry, its an M101A1 trailer...

So its not just the axle that makes the difference... :C

Hitch?! Really? Cause I was thinking about changing that to a civy model... dern

Each size ball, has a load limit(and tongue weight).

The frame is definitely a limiting factor with an M101A1.

Quite honestly, unless you are an engineer, I would recommend not re-engineering the trailer and simply use it within it's designed limits.

Wouldn't think of it. I'm all about safety...

What are you trying to do? I have moved WAY more weight than what the trailer is rated at and it has survived.

Well, there's survived, and there's thrived.

You should never put more weight on a trailer than its stated limits.

.... says the guy who has loaded 60, 60 pound bags of mulch on is 101A2.....

But seriously, the trailer will take a lot more than the data plate says. Stopping power becomes the real safety issue.

For me, having the wheels match is a 'scratching my head and wondering why anybody cares' kind of thing. Yeah, I know. Spares. So carry a spare for the trailer. Done.

Its more ore being able to use the trailer tires as spares for the truck. If I absolutely needed to get somewhere I could forsake the trailer and come back for contents.

Spacers as you want to do, put a higher then normal load on the original studs which lead to failure.

Get the 6 lug hubs and keep a 6 to 5 lug adapter with your 5 lug spares. If you go with the 8 lug later you should only have to change the hubs on the axle or get 6 to 8 lug adapters to go with spares.

Nah, Ill buy one of my buddies Genny Trailers (M101A3 models) and keep it until I'm ready to switch the box over. That will be if I ever get serious about a 2500 series Burban..

Till then, I'll be going with the 3500 lb Axle and the 5 on 5 lugs...
