Okay show me where that ability to switch the lights off is listed in that law. Yes you have to have lights to drive but it doesn't say you can't turn them off when of road.
The law doesn't apply to off road vehicles, only to vehicles registered for road use. So....as long as it is registered for on road use and on the road....

Let me ask you, what would you cite someone who has no brake lights?

Ok, so I went outside and started power washing the 818 and started having some serious thoughts about life and stuff and why today is a crapy day for me and I started to realize where CSM Davis is coming from.

When we do our pre-plans with the fire dept and I go into an office and I see something that violates fire code I have to be able to cite the code when I tell them the violation. So instead of me telling them, you can't block the fire exit, or you can't daisy chain power strips, or plug 10 laser jet printers into one power strip, just because I said so, I need to be able to show them in the fire code, federal and state what I'm talking about.

So, in conclusion.

In the south alot of things are generaly overlooked, leo's turn the other cheek for bumper heights, mud flaps, and such, but up in the north I can see where it might be a little stricter.

Now, when these trucks were built they wern't intended to be licensed for normal highway use so the dod got an exemption for the federal standards for anything that didn't meet the current standard of the time it was built, and that includes things like mraps, and other modern vehicles.

Now that we own them in the private sector and are registering then for highway use we are susceptible to the standards now.

If I forget to turn on my service drive, I expect to get pulled over for no brake lights. Hopefully the cop will just want to talk about the truck and tell me I'm a goof and let me go. On the other hand if he is having a bad day he could cite me for no brakes lights, no mud flaps, non dot approved shatter proof windows, front bumper height, no license plate lamp, and whatever else he wants to find.

Point is, we do this because we enjoy the trucks. If you register it and the inspection station tells you to put a bumper at such and such height, just fab a receiver bumper and call it done, that's what half the people down here do.

This topic is just going and going and I don't see a good end without it being locked, and it doesn't need to come to that.

CSM Davis, I hope to sit down and have a beer with you on the 4th and BS about mv's.

The reason the tail lights are stuck in my head as an example is because I remember getting into a rear end accident at night because the person in front of me didn't have tail lights and decided to stop in the middle of the road. I couldn't stop in time. Luckily everybody was ok, and I remember the cop citing the car I hit for no rear lights, or something like that and cited them as fault.

So, how about them bears....

Will buy that beer, and that is what I was talking about just because you CAN turn them off is not a violation in Mississippi. And as I read the federal code it is not a violation of federal code. If someone could show me exactly where having a switch that will cut off the tail lights I will fix it and apologize.

Is this just a vin check? I dont have time at the moment to read this whole thread, but these registration threads are usually just full of speculation and assumptions.
If this isnt commercial vehicle inspection, and is antique or regular out of state vehicle, all you need to do is bring the truck to an emmisions station for the vin check.
I argued with the guy at the same dmv, and got so pissed off. They are there just to give you a hard time. Spend the $ 10 bucks at an emissions station and save the hassle.

I know, maybe the tail light was a really bad example since the topic was about the bumper. I'm still waiting on doghead to chime back in. I can imagine him sitting in his chair laughing, thinking to himself, yep I just lit the fire, let it burn, lol

I feel bad for the guys in Cali, and especially when we start getting mv's that are manufactured on or after January 1, 2010. We will defiantly get the brunt of that one with the NOx emissions, as I don't recall any mraps having def or any other emissions equipment, not saying we will get mraps, but the fmtv's and other non-armored vehicles.

The M35A2 was built until around 1988.

Federal safety standards have required dual circuit brakes since 1968.

They do not have DOT lighting.

I'll stop here, I have no desire to post all the things that are wrong with using these trucks on highways by the public(which they were never designed for or intended for).

They were not designed or built to be compliant with federal safety standards when they were built.

Let's remember which forum this is in, and NOT reference other trucks(Like the M916 or cucv).

Unplug your tail lights and let me know how it goes with the cops.
There is no law about having a switch that I am aware. If you "have them switched off" then you are guilty of having no lights.
He would give them a ticket for no lights if it had no lights.
You have aroused my curiosity though. I will ask some LEO's I am friends with .

==================
Sorry brother, but you're going down a road with a dead end on this one. If you're right, you'd better tell everyone on here that their vehicle is illegal to run on the road (as built). I'm sure you'll be very popular in your zeal.

So let me mention this to you: if you were in front of me while I was on traffic patrol, do you really think I'd activate my emergency light bar to pull you over to inspect your MV for the lack of airbags, blackout light system, backup lights? Or would I follow you long enough to get enough RS to pull you over to compliment you on your rig?

That's right, the latter.
The issue isn't what regular patrol cops will do. Most will not bother MV's except maybe to check it out. The OP's problem was with DMV cops. They are different than Local and state police. Their job is to bust balls and harass truckers and generate income . They would pull over anything and do what you said. That is why registering with Antique plates is best as it provides exemptions but in the end what you may or may not get away with at DMV is irrelevant. The true test alwats comes when there is a serious accident and the scumbag lawyer sees the "Big evil green monster".

.
Not entirely true. My 1973 Ford has single circuit. I believe the F600's were like that until 1980. I know mine is.

I think the OP's problem was he went to the wrong DMV, asked too many questions and got bad answers. Again, I advised him what to do.

What did you say via pm? Did he just go in for the vin check because it was previously registered out of state?

I had the same run around at the same dmv 6 months ago.

I just talked to my buddy. He is not sure of any law that would make the black out light switch illegal , only that you must have working brake lights. Conn gen stat 14-96

He did not tell me exactly what he did but I suspect he asked too many questions. Just get a temp, go to an emissions for a vin check and register it antique. End of story. That of course limits it as far as uses but I doubt most people are using for it anything more than a toy. If you plan on haul stuff or towing a commercial use trailer then that is a game changer.
That is why I never did antique on my M1008 even though it qualifies.
I have to send in an exemption form every year(?) saying I only use it for personal use but I still have to have Combination plates which are expensive. Just no DOT # or 1 million dollar commercial insurance policy. I have to do this with my F600 as well.
