And you all wonder why we went through getting the LAW changed in Georgia that they are EXEPMT unless you use them for COMMERCIAL operations and or have change the OEM configurations of the chassis and vehicle.

Lots of lingo thrown around and for most you need to consult an attorney - anyone else here is not going to be able to protect you in a court of law.
You hit the nail on the head. This is why we don't allow insurance threads and CDL threads are rapidly approaching the end as well. Too much misinformation.

I have mixed feeling on the insurance one. While there is a list, it would be nice to have a round table discussion about dealings with different companies, and what they will insure so you can have a head start.

Acesneights1 I have two deuces, one with SF97, and one that was registered in NJ. I was told that each needs a vin check and that emission stations no longer can do a vin check on a military vehicle. I will try some other emission stations, but am also going to add a lower trailer hitch that will make DMV happy. I wish I had gone to the same emissions station as I left the DMV;)

What else did they cite as wrong ?
The SF97 is hte problem. That is a red flag. The Jersey title should be no problem.

Took me 5 tries to finally get my deuce through the of BS the CT DMV puts out there. Did the temp plate and took it in for the vin check in Hamden was out of there in 10 minutes max (it was on a rainy day so I think the guy just didnt want to climb all over a wet truck). I didnt even have brake lights! Nonetheless just sort through the crap the DMV puts in your way and it's worth it in the end!

Wethersfield pulled me out of line and said put on a bumper then come back. They never asked for any info and told me they would not even look until I put on a bumper.

What happens when you start bringing your DUKW, Staghound, Ferret and fleet of M3's in to register?

Don't they know a duck will sink if you put a bumper on it?

Vehicles registered historically for parades and sanctioned events are strongly supported by our Government...so far... and if a "vehicle registries" asked us to alter a historical vehicle our Lieutenant Governor would be very upset.

Who do you contact when things don't seem right?

Why did it take 5 times ? Were they DMV cops at Hamden or just regular inspectors ? What did they ask you for ?
CT is the most socialist state in all 50. I can't wait to get out.

Iski,

Oh man, I just spent some time reading through documents posted online regarding this VIN check, and it boils my blood all over again. The information is so ambiguous and vague, it is ridiculous. As Iski stated, it does state that "former military vehicles" needs to be vin inspected at a dmv location. But again, the vin verification form details nothing further than it is exactly that and only that; a vin check. Nowhere is it stated that there is a "courtesy" or "safety" inspection is conducted with the vin check.

So they basically want you to bring it to the inspection lane so that can bust your chops.

Even the other vehicles listed requiring a dmv inpection lane trip for the vin check is vague. ANY dirt bike or motorcycle that closely resembles a dirt bike? Vague. Grey market vehicles? Vague. The dmv is basically taking this opportunity to flex their muscles, make their own system, and prevent registration on their own terms, at this point of the process.

Further, as for antique vehicle, per statute 14-1 in the CT law book, you can't modify the vehicle, yet here they are asking you to modify it at the inspection lane.

(3) "Antique, rare or special interest motor vehicle" means a motor vehicle twenty years old or older which is being preserved because of historic interest and which is not altered or modified from the original manufacturer's specifications;

I would love to escalate this, but I don't have the time, and it is probably a waste of time without other support.

So again, I say find an emissions station that will do this inspection for you. There is a list of dozens of stations that do this. Eventually you will find one that will do the vin check for you. SF-97 or not, it doesn't matter, as you have a temp plate already and they don't even need to see a title or any other form. On top of that, CT does not even require, nor print new titles for vehicles before 1981, so you only need that for the registration process at the dmv hub. You only need ownership history at the point of registration, so a title for these old trucks is not needed.

This was my first attempt at registering something like this so each time I went they told me something new I needed in order to complete the registration. Even though I asked EACH TIME what I needed to have. Its as if they hold information from you. Also, FYI they do not (I repeat) DO NOT accept the printable pdf's off the DMV web site unless the paper it is printed on is "legal paper". I had all the paperwork, everything in check, and they turned me down for the last time because one of my forms (I dont remember which) was printed at home on my printer with regular paper and not the legal paper that you would receive if you were to go directly to the DMV.

If the DMV can bend you over backward and just do everything in their power to pi$$ you off they will!

I had a similar experience when I tried to register my Harley that I purchased out of state.

I have to register mine in the coming weeks. This is not making me happy and Skinny hit the nail right on the head. OP,
When you went down the first time how did you end up going to Whethersfield ? Did you volunteer to the DMV that is was former military or where they able to figure it out ?
Staff: If this is getting too...Ct specific please let us know and we can take it to PM but I would like as much info as apparently things have changed in the People's Republic of Komneticut.

So the story continues. I went to a second emissions station and they did a Vin check. Then I went to Danbury DMV, and they told me that they won’t give me a second temporary as all military vehicles need a full safety inspection and can only be flat bedded to Wethersfield. Second, they don’t like the GL paper work for reassignment of title.
I stood in line for a long time waiting while the guy at the counter talked to someone at Wethersfield. Long story short is that I will have to finish the bumper fast and get to DMV or risk not getting a second temporary plate.
I got the first temporary plate at the Danbury DMV 5 days ago, so maybe I got into the wrong line;(

what is the weight you are trying to register the truck as? I was given the same cr@p about federal safety inspection or something but then I explained the truck is going to be a restore project so they dropped the weight of the loaded truck down below 18,000# and they were happy.......

Man, you are getting the run around! It is all luck of the draw, as depending on the number of people you talk to at the dmv, you will continue to get that same number of different answers on what the correct procedure is. All the while, there is nothing in print to back it up.

Personally, I would take your paperwork to a different dmv and try again. A new face will get a new result. New Britain, Winsted, or where ever else does new vehicle registration. Make sure the registration only says Jeep Kaiser, or AM General. Nothing military. The SF-97 form should only allude to government. They have to manually input their info, so there should be no way that they can say it is military! Remember, they only have your paperwork to go off of.

I believe that is relevant for the temp tag, but for the final antique plate, there is no GVWR stated on the registration, as we technically aren't supposed to haul anything. Technically, as again, I have not seen anything in writing that states this.

and all of you still live in CT? what is wrong with you! move! as a side note, how long can you get away with out of state plates? ever wonder why you see so many Maine plates on big trailers? i ran Maine plates for 3 years because Maryland would not register a truck from Germany. now it is titled in another state.

Ya it is ridiculous here. No argument there. But we all have our reasons for staying.

Honestly, that was going to be my next suggestion, Maine registration. I have done that in the past as well, by mail. You can get away with it until your neighbors or local PD notice. At that point, you may have an easier time transferring it to CT, since you will have a Maine title or registration. No indication of military there. Its just a truck.

Edit: Maine registration requires that the truck remains in Maine for more than 1/2 the year.
