I live in Grafton (a 20 min. north of Milwaukee) I go to school in Sturgeon Bay (Door County Northeast of Green Bay) (where my truck is currently).

I could not find any type of heater. Maybe it was taken out...
Are there any brands of heaters anyone has found to work better/worse/cheaper...etc...

Ok here is how mine is hooked up. Back when I had a battery drain issue I had the Kussmaul auto charger installed with an auto eject plug connection. I have the block heater wired to a switch that comes off of the charger plug so all I have is one plug to worry about. The only thing I don't like about these heaters is your engine needs to be warmed up when you plug them in so the thermostat is open. I have the kats 2000 watt one installed, a bit overkill but why not. More power is better :D

I am pretty sure none of the CUCVs came with a block heater. None of mine have one. All civi 6.2s have one as far as I know. you shouldn't need it unless it is getting down into the teens or colder.

I saw several in the service with them and mine has one. Don't think they came from the factory with them but were mainly installed by units in cold weather areas. Mine came from Minnesota.

Interestingly the ones I saw in the Marines were in San Diego, CA.

Several weeks ago it was about 35 degrees and I tried to start it and it started (after 4-5 cycles of 5-10 seconds of the GP's) but ran really rough while I was holding the pedal down a bit...i let it off a little and the truck died then wouldn't start back up...

Glow plugs are just to help start the motor, once it is running they are not needed. At most, they help with decreasing smoke by coming on and off while the motor warms up. I may be wrong if we are talking sub zero temps, but you say it is happening at 35 degrees. It wouldn't hurt to change the pressure switch in the fuel filter.

yeah the GP's are not needed while engine is running. Hmm... come to think of it there was a slight fuel leak coming from the filter or base. I replaced the filter and it continued to leak a little, then it stopped. And it leaked once maybe a month and a half ago.
