Looking for FMTV owners in Maryland

I'm looking at acquiring an M1088A1. I have some questions in regards to getting the truck inspected, titled and registered in Maryland. It is a 2001, so Historic tags will not be an option. Any help from fellow Marylanders would be greatly appreciated.

Tom, my understanding is that they can be inspected at a commercial truck inspection station and can be titled in Maryland.

I know of atleast 10 owners in maryland that drive theirs. Some are 1079s turned into campers, some are tractors, some are cargo trucks. They went thru state inspection from my understanding. Atleast one member had an issue with gear oil on his front brake shoes if i remember correctly. Bruce bought some newer date coded tires for the chance that they look at those really closely.

CALL the Glen Burnie office Monday AM, ask for a specialist (that’s the buzzword) who deals with military vehicle registration and title.

I went through this in Oct ‘16, spoke with a very nice older woman who knew exactly what and how. Wound up registering historic, went through a local tag/title place, had tags/registration in 3 days, title in two weeks.

YMMV, but I’d advise calling. Write your questions down first, it makes it easier to refer back to details.

The 17th digit Vin for the state inspection system is Hokie at best. Off subject I have a home built trailer with a Maryland assigned Vin which consists of MD is the first two characters and six additional characters after. Had to get the trailer inspected with no issues on the 17 digit Vin requirement. Worst-case according to MVA rep that I spoke to apply for an assigned VIN number and they would still have to inspect it.

You can also go to the Maryland State Police with a VIN verification form and ownership documents to prove ownership. The MSP will sign off thus allowing you to have the vehicle inspected. 17 digit Vin or not

this is no longer true, new system. also anything over 10,000 gvw can not have historic tags.

I purchased my M1081 last year already titled in Maryland but not registered in the state. I transferred the title into my name with no problems, took the truck to a local truck inspection station for the state inspection, fixed a few things, re-inspected successfully, then registered as a "truck", non-commercial vehicle, under 20k lbs. I had photos of the plates with the serial number to show that it did not have a 17 digit VIN and had no problems with either the LMTV or my Zombie Truck (a rebuild from a Suburban many years ago). And true about the historic tags for over 10k lbs.

I used Kessler Body and Equipment in Southern Maryland. Very Southern Maryland. As in, if you drive a mile east you hit the Chesapeake Bay, two miles west the Potomac River, five miles south you hit Point Lookout and can see Virginia from there. About two hours south of DC, but only 10 minutes from where I used to live. Even farther from where you're at. Probably not a good choice being so far from you, though they did get a kick out of inspecting and driving my M1081.

Just an update. I just got a 1078 titled in Maryland. First tag and title place I went to said I needed a special transferee document filled out. The second place I went to no problem. The place I went to was in Halethorpe. Just got the MD title in the mail so I know it works

I haven’t gotten that far yet. I know it has to be a commercial inspection if one at all. Once I get the new tranny in I’ll be taking it to get inspected and I’ll see what they say. I’ll repost my findings. I assume it’s possible considering all mission barbecue trucks are registered and tagged not to mention various military vehicles but not the LMTV. I could be wrong and be screwed. I guess then I’ll have an LMTV with a clear MD title with a brand new tranny in it for sale.

As of 01/01 2019 no former military vehicle can be registered for road use in Maryland. Others are either grandfathered in or ignored. No vehicle over 10K lbs can have historic tags.

No, you can drive it in MD for a while until someone notices out of state tags since there is a limit.
MD inspection places are not allowed to inspect mil vehicles.
