I am going to start this thread to have one place I can document the events of my adventures. I will be asking questions and having links to have one place to look. Maybe this will also help someone who also wants to take the plunge!

And this thread would be useless without pictures. I will be posting pictures of the progress...

Things that I have done to this point.

The glow plugs are not working. The truck will start with a small shot of either and runs like a top.

Diesel is leaking on one of the lines on the top right side engine. I think this is the supply line.

The truck had no brakes! Brake light was lite. The rear master cylinder res was empty... Added some DOT 5 to fill the empty res and the brakes pumped the pedal a few time and brake pedal came up and light went out.

Removed a bunch of cut wires.

Sand, LOTS of sand to remove and clean out

Took it around the block to test brakes. Noticed the tires are square. Brakes worked but grabby. Could be the rust on the rotors.

During test drive it seems the transmission is in limp mode. There was one cut wiring harnesses marked "fire extinguisher" , There was a mix of plastic automotive connectors and Packard connects. There were 2 Packard connectors that where plugged into the main harness. I believe it was in line going to the coil on the transmission relay. I will check to see if this is indeed the case. No power to the 4L80E could be a problem.

In Washington, especially west of the Cascades we have a saying. What is it called after to days of rain? Monday! I always see people fishing in the river when it is raining. I always thought to myself who would do that? Then yesterday I was working on the truck in the rain and soaked to the bone.

On the agenda, parts, and hood repair... and paint...

I have a question... what manual has the wiring diagram for an M1152A1? Also what manual is good for parts? There is an A/C duct that isn't all there (I think)

OK.... Not too sure how either will harm is small amounts. But hey what do I know....

NOW it the glow plugs are working that's a no go. Then again what do I know.

Not here to argue,.
you never use starting fluids on IDI diesel engines…test/replace your glow plugs and test your start box…one thing at a time.
Your fuel leak is most likely the fuel lift pump diaphragm and pump needs replacement, could be a lose hose clamp or leaking hose too…quite common on these surplus trucks.

So... Lets not go on about the either and IDI engines. please...

And back to what I asked... What manual has the wiring diagram for the M1152A1? This will be very helpful.

I know how to test glow plug but I do not know how to test the start box... Is there any theory of operations, schematic or?

This will be very helpful.

What should be the normal charging voltage for the batteries? I think my is running a little high. 14.6 on and 14.5 on the other and 29.1 across both batteries. The gauge needle is pointing just into the red.

This might be what you're looking for. Appendix H has wiring diagrams and starts on page 2677. The main diagrams themselves though are at the end, it looks like they start at 2975

Got the transmission working. Whatever was in line was on the coil wire of the relay was the issue.

Looks like one of the hoses for the power steering is leaking.

I think I found the reason the one of the master cylinder res was empty. I think I have a leaky front caliper. Does anybody know if a caliper rebuild kit is available.

Seems like you got a really good deal on the truck and got it quick .
Thanks! I believe I did... I have going over it and looking for issues. I could have done much worse. Its mostly there and only missing a few odds and ends. I believe the items missing may have been lazy mechanic not putting back all items. I looked at the tires closer and only one is 14 years old and dry rotted. The others are 3 to 5 years old and look good. for the time being ill be looking for one newer tire to replace.

I have tracked down 2 leaks that I want to see if I can fix. The is stuff in the way thought. First is the A/C duct/hose (not sure what to call it) that supplies air to the driver's knee vent. I believe the diesel leak is on the hose/clamp/line the comes from the fuel filter. I would like to remove that duct/hose to gain access and clean. It seems stuck on really good. Any tips on who to remove without destroying things?

How heavy is the alternator? I think one of the power steering hoses is leaking under the alt and would like to remove that... but dang it huge. Oh yeah it one of the 400 amp ones...
