Older Humvee Cannot ID

I am working on a Humvee bought on ebay, I think it was built in the 80's. I cannot find any ID Tags anywhere on the vehicle. The engine is naturally aspirated and smokes quite a bit. I am trying to find a service manual but need to identify the engine first! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unless it's been swapped out with something else, it's a Chevy 6.2L diesel. Post pics, and we can help more. Does it have USMC markings?

I am charging my camera battery now, will post pics today. I believe its a HMMWV, the owner thinks it was built in the late 70's... after research I think its a late 80's... it has a high water fording kit (not installed). I dont see any USMC markings anywhere... the left valve cover is stamped "GM". I did find some numbers cast on the rear of the block, just below the head: "F253" is on the right rear, and "10149599" is on the left. There is a mechanical fuel pump on the lower right and an injection pump (Stanadyne) under the intake. I cannot find any fuel filter anywhere between the fuel tank and the engine. Theres a tag on the rear of the right cylinder head that says "AERA". Thanks for the help.

I am thinking this is a HMMWV with a 6.2 Liter GM, I am wondering if I can get the injection pump rebuilt, (are parts available?) and where can I get injectors? Thanks again for all the help.

Ugh, looks like a HMMWV someone "civilianized" as a cheaper alternative to buying an H1. They probably removed all the military data plates in an effort to make it look like the more expensive model.

Have you found anything that might indicate this was a fire dept. rig? the stickers in the front winshield and on the rear end look to be fire dept stickers..... I'm sure with some TLC you will be able to restore it to whatever configuration you choose.

Yes I have. There are 2 stickers that say "International Association of Firefighters" and under that "AFL-CIO CLC" There is also a sticker on the windshield that says "College of Oceaneering World Port, La." Also inside the cab theres a sticker that says "NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver". There is also an older Bully Dog system in the vehicle. I believe the vehicle was in Arizona at one time.

It was one of the Ex USMC ones, as evidenced by the fording kit switch, and dip stick "caps"... I've never seen a fording kit on an Army M998. Looks like they added some stuff to the engne compartment (Bully dog thing and an extra alternator).. Probably not hard to remove and return to stock. If there is no data plate on the drivers side floor B pillar, the only other hope of determining a year is look for a GM sticker that has the emissions info on it, usually on the drivers side valve cover...

Was there a VIN # and year on the title paperwork?

Yes it has both a generator (looks original) and an alternator. I thought someone probably added the alternator, I planned to take it off. I found a fuel filter, NSN: 4330-01-190-3579, on http://www.stock-number.com/06Class9HUMMVPartsList.htm, but they only sell to military. I am thinking we may either need to rebuild or replace the injection pump and replace the injectors, but I still havent found a source for parts. I dont find a data plate on the door pillar or an emissions tag on either valve cover. Im still thinking the engine is probably a 6.2. I dont think the owner has a title but I will check. I wanted to find a service manual so at least we would be able to do a major tune up.

Update

I just called a local fuel pump rebuilder and told him the pump was a Stanadyne and gave him the #s off of it. He looked it up and said it showed to go on a 6.5 Liter. Did the 6.2 and 6.5 use the same pump?

You might be getting a bit ahead of yourself. Some questions: You say it smokes - how much, when and what color? How much have you driven it? Have you changed the fuel filter? Have you put new diesel in?

Did you get a title? If so, what's the serial number? HMMWV's don't have VIN's. If you look at the base of the windshield frame, in front of the driver (what's called the A-beam) can you see a six digit number embossed or imprinted in the metal?

At the end of the frame rails in the rear - the curved caps that go over the ends of the rails, there should be a series of numbers - what are they?

Before you go off and start rebuilding the injector pump, you might just need to do a little fuel system maintenance. Start with basics and then if you need to spend a 1000 on a rebuild you can.

Depending on the year, it might be a 6.2NA motor (most likely) or possibly a 6.5NA. The injector pump is mechanically the same between the two, but the fuel curves are different. A 6.5 pump may have been used in conjunction with the BullyDog kit to give more fuel. How does it smoke when you use the kit? Does it run well with or without? How noisy is it? the NA trucks are pretty anemic with only 135HP and 5000# of weight.

There have been red painted HMMWV's made. AM General has made a few for the military for fire trucks. Actual HMMWV's not K12 series commercial fleet trucks [special order version of the H1].

That being said it has California Gold doors so it's likely a repainted HMMWV.

Parts are common as dirt for 6.2.

Its white smoke, we have only driven it a mile or so, mostly idled in shop. I would say it is smoking excessively. We have just drained the old fuel and replaced the filter today and will start it shortly and see what it does. Yes I wasnt going to get the pump rebuilt just yet, was going to try everything else first. On the numbers, we found a place on the windshield frame where a tag was (right in front of the steering wheel) but it has been removed. Havent found out if the owner has a title yet. We did find numbers on the frame rails at the rear, on the left is: 80A87 and on the right: 111A87. Will post results of new fuel and filter change. Will also try with Bully Dog and post that. Thanks for your help.
