Personal Rant....... 5 ton wanted......

Maybe some of you don't understand a BUSINESS? People in business to make money must mark up what they sell. I run an auto shop, sure you can go buy that alternator from xyz store a lot cheaper than mine, but here is the price of mine, i have to mark it up to make money and survive. Same for the price of a biscuit at hardees, you think they don't mark up from what their material costs are? HEL YA! that cup of pop....cost them MAYBE $.05 for the pop! you don't complain when you pay $1.59 for it do ya? Same with the trucks...man with the most money wins. you want a big truck and are bidding against bidders with deep pockets? just keep bidding, those bidders will eventually loose money and wont be selling their trucks, so they wont be buying. Also the supposed scare of the truck not coming out and being sold only as scrap has got prices way high! To me thats a nice marketing scam by GL and others,,,they sell for more, they make more. Get us scared and in a frenzy to buy something that we might not be able to buy in a few months...prices go up. Supply and demand. More power to em. Plus you buy the truck, transport it back to your shop, make it run, get the EUC cleared, tag it, have title in hand...YEAH its worth twice as what you paid for it cause most of the hard stuff is already out of the way! If I was a kanjillionaire (lots of zeros on the end) I would buy all I could, scrap them at no matter what price, that makes the ones I have worth more. But thats just me.
So you want a truck, either bid, bid bid or just sit and wait, take your chances....just like the guys did when the humvees were being sold way back when. They sold for what? $1000 and they ran and drove.......what are they worth now? $30,000!!!!! So bid, or wait.

What annoys me is the dealers that bid up every like-item in an auction to the point no one else can afford- in some cases their bid is beyond last week's retail price. Of course then next weeks retail price is 3X what it was, because the dealer sets the retail price. When the dealers buy everything, individuals HAVE to go through them. I don't bid on GL to end up paying retail. Of course, with the minimum bid now ridiculously high (some stuff isn't worth $150) I don't bid on much anymore.

I realize it's everyones right to bid as high as they can, and profit if they want to. But I wouldn't be bidding on GL if I could afford retail prices.

I can appreciate all of this. I own two businesses. I just feel like the military stuff is different because we do it to honor the military. Cam

I sell gas at my gas station to honor he already deep pockets of the oil companies.....Oh wait, I STOPPED selling fuel...MY cost got to be over the retail costs!....never mind!

This is what I am talking about. Every 5 ton on GL right now is the same exact price......... Someone went on there and bid all the trucks to the same price.....

I guarantee you that the dealers are bidding the absolute minimum they can get by with paying, which is the next bid higher than Joe Private schmuck in Poedunk, Genovia. They aren't going to pay twice what the next bidder is willing to pay just so they can mark it up that much higher.

Even if they do mark it up WAAAY too much, economics dictate that demand will drop off, and they adjust their prices lower accordingly. There is nothing different than a dealer bidding on a truck than you or I.

If you can't afford to win the bid, then you can't afford it it anyway. There may be just as many private parties outbidding the dealers because they don't need to profit from the purchase.

Bid what you can afford, win it if you can. There will always be someone that outbids you if you aren't willing to pay enough. There is NO conspiracy to drive the prices up.

I am one of those folks who buy and sell trucks to finance my hobby. I have to do it or I couldn't afford to attend rallys or help other folks out with cheap parts that I sell when I part a truck out. Folks that know me on this site will tell you that I am not too mercenary with my stuff. Often I will trade for what I need rather than ask for cash but that don't feed the bulldog at the end of the month.
I have doubled my money on a few trucks but I average a few hundred per unit. That is after I bid (often sight unseen), went and picked up the truck, made needed repairs on it and spent time and effort trying to sell it.
What I have accomplished is to save some trucks from the scrapper, help other members get trucks and parts and continue to engage in what can be a very expensive hobby (remember 5.00 a gallon fuel).
Another reason for the rise in prices is that the number of available trucks is getting smaller. In two years finding a deuce or 800 series truck on GL may be rare and the prices will rise accordingly.
Don't hate the player.....hate the game.

My father and I sell 2.5 and 5 tons to fund our hobby of collecting 6x6's. I'm only 29 and I owned my first M35a2 when I was 17. Drove it to prom, ski trips, used it for a primary work vehicle one entire Summer. To me there is not a neater vehicle on the road than the M35 from an apperance, exhaust note, simplicity, reliablity, etc. standpoint. We have sold quite a few trucks to fellow SS members. Do we double our money on trucks as you claim?? Not even close but we get to meet alot of other working class Americans who just appreciate a well engineered truck for a good price. If you want a 5 ton do as everybody else does here and SAVE YOUR MONEY or sell something else (like a motorcycle) and buy one. I haven't had cable tv at home for 6 years and that alone has paid for one of our M35's let alone gives me more valueable time with my family. These trucks are the deal of the century to me compared to what else $3-4K gets you in the medium/heavy truck market.
