5 ton boneyard

Here are some 5 ton tractors that have been "retired". In AL these are called "pull-outs" or "GI's" regardles of whether they are M54, M35, etc.

These trucks have been used (used up) in a logging business.........

The loggers have gotten all of the "good" out of them.

The owner said that the biggest trouble they had with them was losing low (1st) gear and reverse - that sent them to the boneyard.

Those things do look pretty crusty, but I'd bet at least one or two could be saved.

That's exactly why I turned down 8K for a truck I paid 4.5K for.
I have nothing against loggers...it's an honorable trade and they are hard working good people.
I just couldn't see my 818 being torn apart and looking like those....so i traded it to AMG!
I would like to know where they are though...i see good parts to save other 5tons.

Is a "pull out" truck the same as a "set out" truck? They are used to pull the log trailers to the road so a OTR truck can pull them to the sawmill?

The owner will sell parts off these trucks. From what he said, most of them have bad transmissions. A couple of them are missing transfer cases. He might even sell the whole lot but I think he keeps them for spare parts. Sounded like the most usable parts would be the axles.

I think they are all multifuel trucks but I can find out if there are any Macks. Some of the engines might be ok too.

"pull-out" trucks move the loaded log trailers from the loading pad to the hiway for the over the road trucks to pick up.

I don't know any Alabama loggers, but I am a Vermont logger. We don't beat our equipment to death here in the green mountain state. Right now you can go over to the deuce page and watch someone on video driving a perfectly good truck over very large rocks. And guys want to say "those loggers" ? If you work your equipment you respect it and its limitations, you take care of it--really good care--and it takes care of you. You drive around the rocks. or fire up the dozer and move them.

There. That's my defense of us northern folks who work in the woods.

I think parts are available from these trucks. I don't know about the logistics of getting them to someone who wants them.

Maybe I could go by a list of 'wanted parts' and get availability and price from him.
