Chicago dealer selling cucv's? Anyone dealt with them

I found two places in Highland Park that has a few CUCV's m1009 for sale for decent prices I guess. They are pretty close to where i live, within an hour or so, so i thought i might swing over there and check them out?

I emailed one guy there and he basicaly stated they have little to no rust and they do a basic once over with them for any major issues. Just curious if anyone knows of them or has dealt with them before.

I do not like car lots. In fact I cant stand them

Most of the times that I have been to car lots they all ask the same question, What do I want to spend and then they follow me around like a hungry dog looking for a treat while knowing nothing about the car or truck they are tring to sale.


If I were I would stay away from a car lots.,,But just for grins if you want to go look at it and if you like it take it for a test drive strait to a shop that knows about the 6.2 and military trucks and pay him for 1 hour of his time to check it out.

If the car lot said no to taking it to a shop of your choice to have it checked out ""RUN AWAY"" don't walk.

if it checks out with no problems at all. Start with 3000 dollars out the door and no more than 3500 """out the door.Tax, Title, and license"""

I have found out how to tell when they are lieing. """There mouth is moveing.""Never Ever take there word.

ASIS in a sale means if it breaks in half after you complete the paper work you now own 2 halves of a truck.

Yeah....used car guys can be the worst. Sorry to any car saleman here!

I called them this morning and they stated they sell them all thetime so this is not a one time truck on the lot.

Prices are a little higher than what I would want to deal with, but......

heck your probably better off dealing with GL than a car lot. It's one thing to buy from an individual who has owned it and gone through it, but a car lot has no idea what they have. Just my 2 cents worth.

You could play the game....I mean, go in there and point out everything thats wrong, take some paperwork from the internet that mentions a lower value, treat them as they do you....if you play your cards right then you can end up with a nice truck it sounds like!:razz:

Edit: If that trucks been there that long than your in great shape...and I think getting a mechanic to look at it is also still a good idea, it will probably provide you with more ammo for your purchase!

I talked with the guy at motor source again today and he says they have 8 m1009's on the lot all in very good shape with little to no rust. He also claimed he buys them direct from the gov and not the GL? Does that sound right?

I will try and contact Kevin RANCHHOPPER to see what he says.

Is their a smiley figure throwing up a BS flag? just wondering. Pretty sure if your buying surplus it's coming thru GL or if another agency had it first GSA. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

He could be buying them from a GSA auction. I like in his add how he says "never been off the base". How the heck would he know? His price is high and chances are he doesn't really know for sure if the odometer has been rolled over already. Anytime I see that few miles on a truck that old I get suspicious. It can happen but it's very rare.

Now that's funny dude. Seriously, I just bought a nice M1009 that needs some minor TLC but is overall sound for $1500.00 from an individual on this site. He owned it for several years and I got a good background on what was done to it and what was needed. Sorry but I have never met an honest used car salesman, it's often not their fault they don't know the real history of the vehicle. I would think dealer price on a cucv would be somewhere between GL and a private party.

Being a car dealer the "how much do you want to spend" is a very important question. I don't want to waste a bunch of my or a customers time trying to sell them vehicles out of their price range. If a person names a price range but I have something priced a little higher I will usually fade to get them into a nicer vehicle.
For me it's not about getting the customer into the cheapest vehicle for the all the money they are willing spend.
I can't believe anyone would rather buy one blind from GL when you can inspect & test drive one on a dealers lot. By the time you "win" one, get the ECU then go recover it then do whatever you have to do to get it running & roadworthy then get a title you have spent a lot of time, energy, & money.
I understand it's an adventure for alot of people and have no problem with that. But it gets a little old the way everone seems to think a dealer should not get paid for his time & effort in doing all this legwork so someone can come in write a check & drive away. This is how we make a living, put a roof overhead & food on the table so we cant pass them along for what they cost.
Sorry if my reply got a little long.
Not sure but what is the warranty from GL? Private patry is between wholesale & suggested retail in all other vehicles so why should PP be higher for CUCVs than suggested retail or dealer? The higher sugg. retail prices are to cover Dealer License, Dealer Ins. & Bond, & all the other costs associated with being a legit auto dealer that a PP guy does not have to pay, so lets just pay him extra for a bunch of expense he doesn't have!

My rule is that I dont buy blind.

I go look at them before I place a bid. I show up and inspect them and the Gsa down the street from my house lets me drive them also GL here in San Antonio lets me do the same.

If they are out of town I call them and ask them Questions about them and if they run and if not what is wrong with them. As a rule they know what they are saleing and what is wrong with them if anything.

Thae last 2 CUCV trucks I bought I drove home.
The biggest pain was waiting 2 weeks for the titles to come in the mail after I got the window stickers

I have no problem buying vehicles sight unseen provided you have a system that works for you I do it every day but someone I know & trust does a walkaround & a test drive on them. I don't think you would get to test drive them up here, at the GSA sale in Billings MT you can check them over but you can't test drive them.
All I was griping about is these guys who seem to think that a guy buying & selling car for a living (legally) ought to be passing them on for cost or a little over or as croftonaviation put it between private party & GL I guess its alright for a PP guy to make some money but not the guy who does it for a living!

I honestly dont have an issue with a guy making a few bucks for his time and troubles at all. We all want the best deal we can get and with these trucks and we know we will have to put some money back into them to keep them going. The trouble is how we define and acceptable level of compensation for that.

In the end it is only worth what someone is willing to pay and as long as there are guys willing to pay $4500 or more for a GL to Lot truck, then they will keep asking for it and getting it.

I may just take the morning and drive over to see this guy north of chicago and see the trucks for myself and hear his line. As a consumer i can walk away. Of course there are some good places to eat in the chicago area so maybe it will be a good day afterall.

I will let everyone know how it turns out if i go up there.

Sajer I agree with everything you say! Everyone thinks they know what dealers pay for MVs but do they know all the costs such as freight, recon & detail, overhead costs per unit to breakeven. These things fall into the "acceptable level of compensation" category now how about a little profit since thats what we are doing it for!
It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and as a consumer you can walk away from it. However some people may look at the full picture (costs, time, paperwork, reconditioning) and think the price is worth it! So just because they want to take the short cut does not mean they are getting ripped off!

gwag, I agree with what you are saying, nobodys holding a gun to anyones head to make them stick around at a used car lot if they don't want to!!2cents

i actually went and checked out a couple of the m1009's at the motorsource lot. i'm definitely a newbie to CUCV's, but a few they have are in good shape. i test drove 2 and started up and visually inspected 3. but again i don't really know a lot about them so i'm doind some research on here before i decide to buy or not. i really want one, but i'm not sure the 3700 bucks they're asking is worth it.
