M1028 vs M1008

The only dif in the two is the 1028 comes with over load spring in the rear and a posi in the front other than that they are the same trucks. without lookin the 1008 is 8800 gvw and the 1028 is 9200 gvw and for some the posi in the front makes a big dif if you plan to do alot of offroading either will make a good truck Depends on what you want to do with it? for the above the 1028 normally will bring a bit more! :beer:

oh yeah, and someone told me that the limited slip differential in the front of the 1028 can be a little squirrely with snow or ice on the road - but that probably wouldn't be a probably for you in California

The 1028 will have a 205 gear drive transfer case where the 1008 has a 208 chain drive.

Rickf sorry but most 1028s still have the 208 the 205 will be found more in the 1010 or 1031 and yes some 1028 have them but most still have the 208 and thanks flint was just going off top of my head on the gvw

1008 only cause I would rather install a better option for front locking diff, and the 1028's seems like people are all over them like hogs on slop. So I could probably snag a 1008 cheaper.

I think my son just snagged an M1028 with just over 18K miles on it (in running condition) from a gov't auction.

There was a choice between the 1028 (with 18K miles) and an M1008 (with 56K miles).

He went for the 1028 because it had fewer miles on it and it had a camper shell.

The front posi in the M1028 is the Spicer Trac-Lok, which is a clutch-type unit to allow for slippage on the outer wheel when going around a corner. With proper gear lube and additive, there is no noticable effect of the clutches in turns. In straight-away pulling, the Trac-Loc performs exactly as a Detroit Locker, with equal torque transmitted to each front wheel.

So he bid on the Nellis lot. I did as well and won a M1028. Paid to much but I now have it. Or will as soon as all the paper work is done.

M1008 VS M1028 debate. The NP205 is a stronger T-case hands down. The Military NP208 is better than the standard NP208. I believe the diffrence is a stronger case. But im not sure. Still gears are better than chain drives. As far as the Posi up front it makes a HUGE diffrence off road. On road you dont know its there. But the best truck is the one you get. Either will make an excellent Heavy Duty Truck. As someone else pointed out the earlier versions of the M1028 had the NP208. I would have picked up either but one the bid on a M1028. Just get either one!

M1028 has a 208 case just like the M1008. M1028A1 has the 205 case. I prefer the M1008 as more often than not they come with troop seats, not common on the M1028 and the bed tie downs are a big plus for my needs. Once you have the differences noted, the decision is best made by you. Here are the exact differrences

1028+
Trac-lock front diff
Overload springs and higher capacity
Most still have shelter anchors

1008
Most of the time troop seats
Nifty cargo tie downs in the bed

Note that some shelter carriers (1028s) didn't even have a tailgate.

i like both. it just so happened that when i was ready to but one there was only 2 for auction near me, and both of them were 1028's i just chose the one with least mileage. got unlucky with the rust though, cause it came from Vermont.
