M818 Trailer

I have been looking at quite a few M800 series 5 tons in the past few weeks.

I am thinking about getting an M818.

I want to use it to tow my Dodge pickup and maybe our D3 cat, or JD 310 backhoe now and then.

What trailer would work well for this?

Need to be able to load without a ramp, and be able to haul it on the highway without being over width.

There is no military trailer commonly available that will meet you description. You should look for a civilian one and convert the lights to 24V.

Both. There aren't any drop trailers that are of a military design. they do own some, but they are purchased 'off the lot' as it were. So, that leaves plenty of trailers, but they are ramped and/or overwidth.

I have a m172a1, it is overwidth, but that's only $100 a year for a permit. (at least in SC)

An M270 is the trailer I really want, for the 40ft useable deck.

There are a couple of other types, but they are high trailers (standard flatbed type)

Unless you want to go overwidth for the m172, you're just about going to have to get a civilian trailer (or a m270...)

Next question...

I know the m818 has air assisted hydraulic brakes. I know it also has glad hands on the rear. Does it have the ability to control the trailer brakes on a standard air brake trailer correctly?

How does that system work?

Next. I know the truck also has a 24 volt system. Some say it also has a 12 volt system? If so, what parts are 12v?

Did alot of searching and reading, but not really finding the answers I am looking for.

That looks like it would work! It is not over width?

I can make ramps!

Are those hard to locate? What kind of price would I expect to pay?

An M818 can pull a civilian trailer, and the air brakes will work on the trailer just fine. There isn't a air parking brake valve in the cab, or tractor protection valve though.

Everything on a m818 is 24v, except the preheater. You would have to build or buy a 24v-12v adapter, or change out the lights on the civi trailer. A m915, 916, or 920 have dual plugs for tactical trailers and civi ones.

The m270 trailers aren't too rare, I have been looking for one for awhile. They are not overwidth. Expect 1,500-10k depending on condition and how much the guy who owns it thinks it's worth. If you find one surplus, I've seen them from 2,500-5k.

Ok. The M900 series would explain why I keep reading about dual plugs.

Not too big of a deal to install 12-24v LED's on a trailer.

Does the m818 have the trailer brake control on the steering column?

From what I read on here I should at least install a trailer protection valve.

How does the brake peddal work? Is it an air valve like normal a normal semi? Guess the whole air assisted hydraulic system confuses me. Somebody back in the day should have picked one system (air or hydraulic) and went with it.
