WMO and filtering

I'm new to Steel Soldiers, bur not new to the Deuce. I have three Deuces, a M105A2 trailer, five air shift spare transfer cases, a couple of those crappy sprague clutch transfer cases, six spare transmissions, and 4 engines in the big steel case, just in case I need parts.

Regarding WMO for fuel, I have been running pure WMO for the last 3,000 miles with no problems at all. I've run WATF about 2500 miles. I like it best. I ran Waste Cooking Oil for a while, but it's hard on my pumping system, unless you clean it after each use. YUK! And Laquer thinner or Acetone is about the best way to clean up the WVO, but its $15 a gallon. Plus when I'm running it, cats follow me around. So I got off of that and I'm sticking to the WMO and WATF.

I pump it into drums and store it until I need it. I use the 6HP clean water pump from Harbor Freight. I filter it coming in to the pump with a 100 micron metal mesh washable filter. Coming out of the pump I have two 30 micron Wix Oil filters, and a 10 micron canister type fuel filter. When I pump it out of the drums, it goes through the same filters again. I have had no problems doing it this way. I change the three outgoing filters after pumping about 150 to 200 gallons of oil. The primary fuel filter on my Deuce has gone the entire 3000 miles with no problem, and I just changed it this week. As for starting, I live in Louisiana and we don't see a lot of really cold weather. However, during the last week we had temps going down to 17 degrees. I hit the red button that morning and the Deuce cranked just like it does at 80 degrees. I was surprised, but very happy. I have begun running used ATF, and it is doing fine. I filter it the same way. I can upload a photo of my filter system if anyone wants to see it.

What's a good source for WATF? Transmission shop? What are they typically doing with it?

It says by my Avatar photo that I'm a private, and JCKnife you're a General. So I saluted before I started writing this. I drive my '68 model Deuce, (rebuilt 1990 to Depot Standards) everyday, seven days a week. So I need all the fuel I can lay my hands on. I have three local transmission shops that give it to me free. They had a company picking it up, and not paying them anything, but being Americans, and slobbering all over my Deuce, they decided to give it to me. I believe they made the right choice. They just want to get rid of it. I also have an Aerobatic Bi-Plane that I keep at a pretty good size airport. I do them a favor by pumping out their two, 300 gallon waste oil tanks as often as they need it, so that's a good source for WMO. I keep my pump and drums in my M105A2 trailer, and so it's all portable. My trailer is at the airport at my hanger, so I'll get out there ASAP, take some pictures, and post them for you guys to see. There are a couple of things that I will show you, that I learned the hard way, so you can do it right the first time and not have to experiment like I did.

For filter media, the filter bags work very well. The link below is a great vendor of this product. For WMO progressively filtering in one pass down to 5 microns produces good results.

OK guys - I've been reading and learning from ya'lls expertise for a while so I'm gonna try and give back something. Here are photos of my portable pump and filter system. I use it for WMO and WATF. However, if you are a glutton for cleaning the system, it works for WVO as well.

I bought the pump at Harbor Freight. I tried the smaller pump and motor and it worked fine, but I broke the pump because I did not support the weight of the filters. Now you don't have to go through that. The only reason I replaced it with the 6.5 HP bigger engine and pump is because it was on sale for only $40 more than the small one. Also, I don't run the pump engine over about half throttle. Why you ask? I figure since the pump has a 2 1/2" inlet and outlet, which I reduce to 3/4" because a 3/4" hose and nozzle seem to fit in the places where I need to pump from. A bottle neck? Yes, but sometimes you have to go with the flow. Also, I use a 60" x 3/4" pipe to go down in the container I'm pumping from. That length is working for me. As you will see in the photos, be SURE TO CAP THE END of the pipe so you don't suck the crap right off the bottom. There is a photo included of my answer to that problem.

I hope this will help you guys put more miles on your trucks, and not have to buy diesel, which just keeps going up.

I tried coffee filters, it takes forever to drain through with just gravity. A cheap way is to go to your local farm store, get a hand pump, some fuel filters (one a water separator) and pump it together. Pump it out of your drum through a filter and into your tank!

Nice Robert! The only issue I see is you don't have pressure gauges on the filters. Eventually, a filter will plug up and you will not know which one. After time you will get to know what needs attention, but till then, the gauges help a LOT. Hope this helps some.

Thanks gimpyrobb, and you're right. I've been using this set up so long that I can tell by watching the flow when they start clogging. Generally speaking, the two Wix oil filters will last right at 150 gallons, and the fuel filter about 100 gallons. They're easy to change, and at about $16 for all three, 250 gallons for $16, is better than almost $1000 at the pump. I eat sleep and drink M35A2. I drive to and from the airport where my plane is everyday, and that's 30 miles round trip if I go the shortest way, and I never go the shortest way. There are places I need to run in and pick up a few necessary items almost everyday that are not on the shortest route. Like the local Army surplus store, Bass Pro, Academy Sports, the Tactical Store, etc. You know what i mean. Thanks again for the info.

Just ordered the similar pump from hf... 20% off coupon for st patties day and free shipping... they didnt have your model with the 2" outlet (in store only) so i got the 6.5hp with the 3" inlet/outlet...

UPDATE:

received my pump from hf... went out and bought 3" hose and pvc pipe and made a nice setup for retrieving the wmo... gassed up the pump, filled it with oil, primed it and went to start it up to move wmo from my tote to a barrel.. pulled the pull start and it came off the pump... screws everywhere... called hf and am awaiting the return tag... fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu....

m1008-can I use 100% WMO or WATF or should I use like a 70% W to 30% Diesel.......any thoughts. I'm getting all my equipment around to start using WMO or WATF. Want to know if 100% is ok or not?
