Welcome to the addiction ! Fairly new myself, but I would always, with any auction, know your top dollar before you even start, and stick to it ! WAY to easy to get sucked into the " not gonna' get MY truck fever " !

Just my 2 cents worth, don't ask how I know ! ENJOY !

Check everywhere, and take your time. I just bought an M1010 at a local cl;assified sight, then found another that was in much better shape at a local city auction! The one at the city auction only has 3,300 original miles on it!!:-D

Welcome to the MV addiction support network!! Once you have one, you'll want another.
Read everything about the MV you are interested in. Use the search function here on SS for any questions you may have.
I bought my second 1009 from a dealer in Texas. Very little rust. When I'm home, I drive mine just about every day.
Again, welcome and good luck!!

Welcome to the sickness! as stated just look around and if pos. look at one before you bid on it. treat it like any other car or truck you want to buy but remember its a 25 year old truck even with low miles still 25 years old good ones are out there but so is junk if you will!

:ditto: I had a M715 to a M1009 plus I just got a M35a2c. When does it stop.:cookoo: Watch out for rust in the northern trucks. Mine came from Huntsville AL and still had a little rust.

"Welcome to the addiction..." thanks to all! I've always been addicted to practical application. :)

My 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500HD is a short cab, and with my third kid due any day I need a new truck that will haul the family to the woods along with a trailer of fun stuff... and I just plane old like diesels... so i started researching blazers and suburbans and found the M1009...

My other car is a '83 Mercedes 240D, and I have a love hate relationship with keeping it running... love it when I get it running... or fix something that I've been just making work for a while... like the alternator tensioning bracket I just replaced yesterday... I hate it when it stops at an inopportune time (what time is 'opportune' to break down anyways).

Sounds like from my reading here I should expect the same from a M1009.[thumbzup]

Been picking away at getting it running the last couple days... and hit it hard today.

Yesterday: Topped off the batteries that came with it with distilled water and tried to charge... one held 10.3 V the other wouldn't go over 11.8... went and bought 2 new type 31's and put them on a charger over night.

Checked the oil... looked new and clean... will get it running and then change.

Today, Did the doghead starter relay mod, then put the batteries in (cleaned terminals and grounding lug) found one bat terminal wire frayed and getting hot... will replace later.

Drained all coolant, siphoned out of over flow tank, and refilled
Cut the fuel line near the muffler and used a siphon to start it drain down an extra piece of fuel line.... got about 7 gallons out and found all the fuel to be bright and clear, so we stuffed an air gun up to the hose, blew air up to stop the siphon and installed the electric fuel pump and pre filter.

Ran the wires for the electric pump, but not sure where to splice in power. would like to pull power from an circuit only on with the ignition in run.

Please advise! Looking hard at the pink wire that runs to the IP.

Still need to remove and bypass mech fuel pump and install blanking plate... anyone know where to get a female fitting to 3/8 barb to bypass the mech fuel pump? At a hardware store?

We had to post duty, so we put on the new fuel filter, used the siphon to pull fuel from the tank through the prefilter and up through the electric pump... stripped the wires and put it on the hot bus and blead the system... then pulled the wire off the 12v hot bus...

She fired right up on the first start, then sputtered and died, then didn't catch on the second attempted, then sputterd and fired up and stayed running on the third..... we took her for one spin around the block and then parked her infront of the garage for the rest of the work...hopefully tomorrow if no one needs our help tonight!

Do the front springs look too flat and worn out to you?

Front springs look ok, they all look like that after a while...

Nice install on the fuelk pump and filter.

Dont know where to pull power off for your pump, somebody will come along and let you know. I would not use the pink IP wire, I would go with a dedicated circuit.

Look and sounds like your on the right track, good luck!!

BTW, might want to post pics of the rest of the truck, were kinda visual around here!

I was one of the bidders on "your truck" too. I raised my top dollar at least once, but I wasn't even close there at the end. However, it worked out well for me because after the auction ended, my son decided to sell me his M1009 (that we bought in Jan.).

Welcome aboard. Shop around, don't jump on the first one you see. If at all possible, look at it first. Read all you can, ask questions-you have a good start here on the forum. Start looking at prices for spare parts. and remember, once you buy one, the addiction has started!

Did more on the electric pump yesterday... posted at thread above with lots of pics.

Need to make a clean bypass on the mech pump... does anyone know where to find a 3/8 barbed fitting with a female side that will screw right on the hard pipe that leaves the Mech pump and runs up to the top of the block and then to the fuel filter (which I assume is to preheat the fuel)?

What fitting would make it a clean install and then make putting a mech pump back in a breeze. Does any one know the designation for the type of threads/fittings the fuel system uses?

Tom
