    FMTV Highway Speed

The people you hear about constantly blowing drivelines and transmissions are the same people who need to go faster than 55. I run mine at 47 all day long on the highways and byways with the farmers. On most two lane country highways 45 MPH and below is the speed at which you need to legally...

    M1078 Trans filters

I've seen those "last modification" jobs outlast the entire vehicle. In fact lots of times they increase the reliability for the medium term future. Also, I'm not sure how much you think replacement parts cost, but it seems like I could trash all four hubs and buy new ones for the same cost as...

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

I tried to have my mechanic check the gear lashing before i left, they prioritized other projects and then blamed a driveline vibration on the slip joint...that may have been incorrect, and it might have been in my best interests to have trusted my original gut telling me to check the gear...

    M1078 LMTV planetary hub setup

I'm not sure what an LMTV weighs when up armored and pulling a trailer as designed, but if all anyone has on the back is a camping box, they may have nearly already "halved" the expected operating load on the vehicle axles. you know, not to include the camping boxes where people give them all...

Yeah, allison recommended the mechanic i am at, and one of the options i'm considering is just pulling the entire thing shift pad included and sending it to allison and having them deal with it. although i do see MME or one of those dealers has a full trans/transfer case reman for like $14,000...

Yes, the main fan comes on at between 205 and 215, it previously was not always coming on or not always coming on at full speed because there was an intermittent leaky air seal at the fan clutch, but i fixed that two days prior to this issue. at some point i will have that fun cut out switch...

    M1078 Trans filters

The overheating was separate from the loss of power, but i'm sure it contributed in some way. on like day 5 of a cross country trip the trans started throwing an overheat warning on the dashboard (the light) it only started in the afternoon when the reflection off the blacktop was throwing a...

    M1078 Trans filters

Is it possible that the thrust bearing failed and ended up blocking the flow of the transmission, and overheating it and then i only lost power when i FIRST switched directions that day because the force on the torque converter always in the same direction was holding the converter together...

Thank you all, looking into everything here as the mechanics time becomes available...for now, grabbing some gear and a U-Haul and heading for home and studying for the Montana bar exam in late July. The fun experiment shall continue slowly...

    M1078 Trans filters

For anyone looking for the answer to the original question the Wix part from the parts spreadsheet comes with two filters. The FMTV/LMTV parts spreadsheet trans fluid capacity listed is probably the FMTV size trans pan/fluid capacity...my 1994 LMTV's Alison 3700 only seems to need about 5 gal...

Yeah, i've found all these, i really appreciate the people like this heli cool and Colt, and Wes, even where they aren't doing the same thing i'm doing they get close enough to answer a lot of my questions. Other people on youtube it can be funny to watch them fight with their own tools and the...

Solinoid issue supposedly, we shall find out on Saturday. So far I spent a few grand getting her road worthy, and have spent a few grand while on the road chasing down non critical issues...this is the first major issue, but the rig made it 1800 miles already and seems fine other than the trans...

Allison transmission code 55-17 - Solved

5517 code is a shift solinoid error...according to allison. My issue also came on when switching from D to R, but I threw a 5517 code and tried trans fluid level, temp was not an issue, i was already overheating the trans (the light was coming on). trans overheating is a symptom of bad shift...
