You sure it's the IP? White exhaust smoke indicates unburned fuel. I had the exact same symptoms and new glow plugs knocked them out. I have a swollen glow plug puller should you ever want to use it. I needed it badly. I suspect my own IP because I have a rough idle. Something to do with the...

So the lights were working without the alternators in, then you put alternators in and they crapped out? Maybe disconnect the alts and see if the lights work. If they do, I suspect a grounding issue. If not, fuses. I'm not the world's expert at all, just thinking. I'm up in Fairfax if you...

    What maintenance to do first?

Update for posterity: It was the glow plugs. Only two of them tested as good. Two were swollen badly. I bought the tool from Leroy Diesel to pull them out. That tool is worth its weight in gold. I installed eight AC Delco 13G glow plugs and now the motor starts up instantly with no smoke.

    New truck in Northern Virginia

I just messaged you. I haven't done any work the last couple days since it started raining ice.

Yes, thanks again for coming down. I'll check the glow plugs if only to rule them out, then get the fuel system in shape. I really appreciate the field expedient testing method. I will give it a shot.

    What maintenance to do first?

And so I did. The -10 says to holler at it lol. Surely that's a typographical or digital transcription error. I have attached the relevant pages from the -10 and -20. The steps correspond well to the advice given above. I'm confident I can solve the hard start. I'll just have to find the...

    What maintenance to do first?

Thanks, this is the kind if info I was curious about. The harmonic damper is suspect too. I've only had the truck 2 days so I'm still getting to know it.

I'm inclined to think you're correct about priming. I will check glow plugs too. I had occasion to maintain MVs in Alaska and glow plugs were always everybody's first suspect, but more often than not they weren't the problem. Has anyone ever compiled a checklist of things to look at on a newly...

    What maintenance to do first?

I have a M1009 I dont know much about. I figured I'd go through the PMCS checklists in the -10 and -20 when it gets warmer. I do know it has a class II/III oil leak somewhere. I intend to change the oil anyway because it's a bit low and I don't know when it got oil last. The only other...

    New truck in Northern Virginia

Nope. God knows where the hood came from, but it's blue under the flaky spray paint. I may blank it off or replace the hood before I CARC it. The fenders have been trimmed and it needs a tailgate rebuild first.

    New truck in Northern Virginia

I registered for the site three years ago, and I've finally been able to buy a M1009. It's been a long time coming. This one came to me with 5,000 miles, 14 bolt rear, Dana 44 HD front, and HMMWV wheels and tires. I'm most looking forward to painting NATO camo on it. It needs some body parts...
