HACKED M1009 WIRING

I have just bought my first 1985 cucv M1009, and I am restoring it to its former glory. That being said once the dash was ripped apart and I got to the wiring it looks like a nightmare. The previous owner did a 12v conversion, and I’m wondering if it’s really worth restoring back to 24v. I’m not really sure where to start or what to do. I have been searching online for wiring diagrams to try and retrace what happened, ignition system is jacked up, black out lighting, headlights, glow plug wiring, and alternator 2 is missing, etc… any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Look on Facebook for a guy named Mike Morin...he has at least a dozen trucks and blazers torn apart or for sale. He'd have the dash, engine harness, starter and alternator. If you tell him what your doing he'll make sure you get what you need. Be easy to just pop a new harness in it than trying to fix but connections. He's in Massachusetts but ships that stuff. I have bought from him in the past and ships fast. If you want a new front light harness they are available new old stock online. When you get the starter get the bracket for it too...he'll have that.

Hey guys, so I have some new information. Upon digging further, it actually looks like the truck went to another department in the government like fire dept, or police dept possible I don’t know for sure. The reason I say that is because right underneath the hood spray painted I could barely make out “CONVERTED TO 12V” so I think that wherever the truck went after the military they did a conversion, and then the guy I bought it from added his own aftermarket stuff when he got it. So I think it might not be as bad as I initially thought, still ripping it apart but I thought this would be useful for anyone else.

That certainly has been the case, looking through everything it is quite simple. Whoever had it before me must’ve been a member here I’m thinking, because they already did the doghead mod, and some other insider stuff. One thing that has caught my interest is the previous owner installed a glow plug switch, and I think completely bypassed the ignition system. When I turn the key over I cannot hear the solenoid at all, only when I press the switch do I hear it activating. Just thought it was interesting… I didn’t know you could bypass the glow plug controller, and if you can what the benefits are…

Using a manual switch is nice if the card is bad or the system needs help once in a while to get going. It's very simple to do...just ground the wire and the relay turns on. Cards are out there still so you can get a good one.

Ok, I know there’s a lot going on in these but the main focus is the one in my hand orange with black stripe to red goes into my fuse box.

and then in the picture with the fuse box the two blue wires to the right of the red one go to my glow plug switch and then assuming the relay then glow plugs…

If that's all you got that's not a big deal at all. Looks like they unhooked the blackout switch and hooked it directly to the fuse box...not how I would have done it but ok. I see it next to a 5 amp fuse...I'd pull it and see if it is...headlights need 25 amps...be curious which fuse is feeding the lights. The ground for the glow plugs people like to go out to the relay because they don't realize it can be done at the card...is that where it goes?

Only thing that gives me a minor heartattack is the positive cable right over the home made steel battery hold down. The relay for the starter is a standard gm relay not a doghead but no big deal. Are all the wires still there for the drivers alternator?
