Injector Pump Question

Not to step on toes... With pump in the truck place cover just forward of housing (about 1/2 inch). (reference front of truck)
Top cover will nest and drop down (with solenoid lever into the linkage. Note a preload - spring back to forward as one slips top cover to the rear (1/2 inch +/- ) Cover and housing flush mating with eye on the gasket in the grove. Locating screws to housing to align. That's the dance I do. Also , while in there... was the metering valve flipping freely?

Not your exact setup but the solenoid lever is in the same place in reference to the tab.

This is the no fuel position, as you see if you slide the cover forward you are compressing the solenoid spring which is holding the linkage in the no fuel position.
If you slide the cover forward and do not feel spring tension it is not correct.

Thanks to Jyg101's info, the metering valve is now moving freely. It was stuck, so was only seeing slight dampness while trying to bleed the injectors. The top of the pump was clean but the fuel was old and it sat about 2 months without starting.
Thank you for the steps, its tough to be sure its being done correctly without seeing what's happening.

Hopefully within the next couple of days I'll get her buttoned up here and re-bled. I'll post back the results.

Freeing the metering valve did the trick! The mechanism had gotten stuck due to old diesel fuel.

Came unstuck with some gentle manipulation, mechanism is outlined in the attached picture. Buttoned everything back up, bled all injectors and fired it up. Note: Pushed the pedal down to the floor once prior to starting and ran the glow plugs a number of times, it would try to start but die (probably a bit of air still in the injector lines). The solution was to give it a little steady throttle once it attempted to start and let it smooth out. Starts every time as normal now.

I remember a guy here pointed to checking the metering valve. With the great picture and with my microscopic glasses on... I am going out on a limb and say this quick fix might be back. Why I (my guess) say this is seeing snarf foo all around in the housing.

My guess is this is the dreaded microbiological results of old bio fuels and water concoction. The valve in question is precision fitting and the "bug" will stick it up without a lot of flushing of all fuel components from the fill cap to the injectors. Essentially a big douching lol, with removal of major components, clean, flush, maybe replace and sterilizing.

I will likely take some heat for this line of thinking. Sure there a "mechanics in a can" or bottle that might start the break-down of this but, it's a crap shoot (no joke) I just went thru this and looking to write more and some pictures.

IMO, drain everything, check for a sludge, thick maple goo at bottom of tank. If it is present... out comes the tank and the process begins. It will not be fun.

Bad cases easy to spot and also in suspension. May have a funny "not a diesel smell." Brown / red crap in the filter and lining every fuel component, pump, lines, everything. It is alive and has to GO! There are strong biocide additive that may neutralize or kill it, along with other treatments. California biofuel (or anywhere?) and not moving lots of fuel thru the system, 60 days and can grow to a BIG problem. HuMV's that are mall or parade rides beware.

Like Covid to a HumV, CAMO
