if I was researching this and had no idea what trans too install and found that the factory/military uses a 4L80e, as well as the vast majority of HMMWV shops performing conversions too same, I would do you self a favor and stick with the 4L80e.
Some people have $ to throw at a 4l80e conversion.. not moi

I have have a 6.5 and 242 and have been looking at both the 4L80e and 700r4 and to do it right, the $$ difference between the two is not that significant.

Did you have to change the flex plate? I priced out a used 4L80e for $900. Black Dog Customs sells a plug and play tcm for $1000. They have a 4 speed shifter for $1000. So after all is said and done with the drive shaft probably $4500. That’s all I paid for the m1097r1. Think I’ll leave it alone 😂

I run 62 mph on the highway with my three speed and that's fine with me. I'm sure not in that much of a hurry anymore to need more speed. If mine gives up the ghost I would definitely go with a built 700R4 and won't have to deal with electronics. I've had a number of vechicles with the 700R4s and they performed great. The only unicorn part is the TV cable bracket as it could only be found in a 6.5L chevy van 4x4 with the 700R4. Very hard and expensive part to find. I don't use my truck for hard 4 wheeling for if I did I would stick with the more robust larger trannys.

Just my .02 cents.
