m925a2 winch issue?

My m925a2 the winch seems weak... anything i should look at? It works and pulls in and goes out but then you would think that the winch would drag the truck on the ground with tires locked... Instead the winch just doesn't move. I was pulling a tree down with the winch but I had to back up to pull it down. anyones thoughts would be appreciated. I checked fluid level and it seemed fine. Its engaged and pulls and gets tight but then has no "grrr" to the winch. Yes I increased the throttle...

Have you checked the shear pin?

If you have a solid place to attach the winch - and a second body out under the truck - what happens if you engage the winch? In other words does it pull or not. The winch on a 925 is generally powered by hydraulics, and if that is the case there really isn't a shear pin. What about the oil level in the hydraulics? It is possible that the pump is worn and doesn't have any "gumption".

The winch works with a low load. Like I can drag my ram 1500 backwards with winch connected however when connected to a tree the winch kept humming and you could see the line shaking but no movement in the line or pulling of the truck forward. Is there a way to test a worn pump? Does this even happen?

Correct, no shear pin on the hydraulic units that I’m aware of.

The only real thing to check is the hydraulic pressure, 1800psi and 1800 engine rpm max IIRC. I have never been very impressed with the power of mine and have a pressure gauge taped in on mine. Similar to your experience, with less than 50’ of line out I can stall the winch, truck empty, if on ground with good traction and my foot on the brake to keep all six tires locked. I always keep at least one snatch block in the tool box, also remember the more layers you pay out from the winch drum will increase your pulling power.

The pumps will not likely be worn with the little use they see. Pressure test will tell you if you have a problem. If your pressure is under 1700psi, let us know, I can post a link to my dump bed build that covers how to shim the pressure relief higher.

I left out 125-150' of line so about half the spool was out. I mean i would have expected the winch would be awesome. I had a m35a2 and that winch had a sheer pin but it was strong and would break a sheer pin if it was too much. I will see what I can do with putting a gauge on the winch. where did you place it or did you place the gauge in line with the winch?

I forgot about the issues with these junk control towers, I’ll see if I can dig up my thread on beefing mine up. This can cause problems of not being able to fully open the spool valve and not achieving full pressure.

I did a bunch of modifying to my hydraulic system during my dump install, but you just need to tee into the high pressure (while winding the winch) work port on the control valve. I used as small as hose as I could get and ran up through a hole in the floor to mount a gauge on the side of the control tower. Make sure you use fittings and hose rated for the high pressure.

thanks for the info! i plan to make a dump bed for this truck as well in the near future.... not really thinking electric was the way to go!

In the cab. My A2 had a simple cover. Pull it and see if the bracket is secure. ANY play = reduced throw at spool valve. Recommend you do not adjust cable end/ clevis before check. If OK, your call- leave it or run a bead or extra bolts.
