I thought I was doing 65 until I installed a GPS unit in mine. My gauge is off by about 7 mph. When I get mine to 60 it’s rough. At 65 it’s scary.
I was using a GPS to confirm. Mine is set pretty close though. I got a pretty good truck. Not a looker, but runs & drives great. I did clean it up a bit the past few weeks. Getting that Deep Water Fording kit on. Got almost all the parts.

Yea I can do 65 all day but I totally agree. It’s scary as hell. Sounds like the damn thing is gonna throw a rod at any given moment.

Hey all. I just took delivery of what has been labeled as a 1097R1 from 1986 purchased off of the gov planet site. The S/N lines up with 1986 too. This is my first foray into the HMMWV world so please bear with me for any silly questions I might pose now or in the future.

Judging by the information upthread and the placards on my vehicle, mine was overhauled in 2012. It appears to now have a 6.5L engine. The odometer had 2,900 miles on it when I received it. I think it also has a 4 speed as it has a "P" on the shifter. I have not gotten it up to 4th gear on my property yet to confirm. That said, it fires right up and runs pretty smoothly.

I plan to do all fluids and filters soon as I am guessing they have not been done since 2012 (the fuel filter has 2012 written on it). For TM research purposes, should I treat this vehicle as a 1097R1 with a 6.5L? Below are a couple of pictures of it.

I believe you are right. Looking at it, I would start with cleaning contacts. Like that pair of wires attached to the head (Right Rear) - Those need to be scrubbed with a wire brush and AntiOxident Paste applied. There are a bunch of wires on this beast and they all need the same application of cleaning and pasting...

DISCONNECT the batteries before you start!

Welcome to the world of military green... Take your time. Cleaning those contacts will help you - and avoid buying a grounding kit. It's a waste of money.

Engine is post 196900 serial number with the remote power steering reservoir, frame looks like early 3 speed, and if serial number matches those produced in 1986 then it's a mishmash. I hadn't heard of M109R1 trucks that kept their original serial number but anything can happen during rebuild.

For body I'd probably use the M1097A1 for parts, but engine/transmission and possibly transfer case and other drivetrain parts would be post 196900 serial number 1097A2.

There are not a lot of them, but M1097R1's with the "A2" power train are out there. I got one myself now too.

They have some oddball electrical things in them that are not really in any technical manuals it seems. You will more or less need to us manuals for the M1097A1 for some stuff, but then when it comes to the power train, look at M1097A2.

Treat it as a M1097A2, the wiring is as stated a little different.
If the GVWR is 10K then you have the 10K hubs brakes and half shafts, (M1097A1) lucky you as you can get the aftermarket half shafts cheap (with lifetime warranty)
You are lucky to get that truck as most R1s have the 3 speed and the dreaded V belts. I have a 4 speed R1 and cannot give it away, it is a nice truck though.
