It turned out that though I have a 1984 M1010 and had ordered a lock cylinder for correct year of vehicle, it apparently had an older steering column in it from the factory (I feel certain with only 19K miles on the truck). I reordered the lock cylinder for an older square and it went in fine. I bit tricky to get the cylinder out but eventually it came out easily. Only regret is I could not find a set of column lock and door locks that were painted black.
