Hello HMMWV Folks,

We just got our M1097R1 HMMWV from GovPlanet delivered and are still awaiting the title stuff (told up to 90 days). We live in Southern Oregon and would like to know what issues we may encounter, if any, when we get to the point of getting our HMMWV street legal. If there are any other HMMWV owners in Oregon that can share their experience and tips for us so we might save some headaches we would appreciate it.

We are in Grants Pass.

Thank You!

Not good news, but this will answer your question: Map of States That Are or Are Not HMMWV Friendly
@FlameRed - I saw that, but I also saw folks with Oregon tags so not sure what to make of it.

Oregon titles Hmmwv’s for road use…they passed a law years ago.
Dont let the parade use BS bother you…ive driven my historical plated trucks for 40yrs with no issues…
@Retiredwarhorses - Does that mean I get a special plate for Oregon and just use it on the street? I've never owned a "Historic" vehicle before.

There are HMMWV's in Calif. With regular plates.
Have been for years.
Might be because they were from original auctions here but they do exist.
So that kind of messes with the Map.
So map not always accurate

police only care that you have 2 things when you drive a vehicle, insurance and current tags, are there D*ck cops? Yea…but it’s more an exception to a rule . Don’t drive like an idiot and do stupid crap and there is no reason for an officer to pull you over.
Also, don’t use them as daily drivers….you are allowed to make maintenance drives on special plated vehicle, it’s tough to explain that away if you’re at a bar on a Saturday night though

Oregon is hit or miss, depending on the DMV you go to. My last HMMWV got regular tree plates but my current one has SP plates. You only pay once for the SP Plate, no renewal. I drive mine almost every day in central Oregon. Get your vin inspection from one DMV, then go to a different DMV for your license plate , no need to have the vehicle there the second time.

@GuntherRommel - I have a couple questions for you:

  1. How long ago was your last HMMWV registered - DMV'd in Oregon?
  2. Did you buy your HMMWV from GovPlanet and get the SF97 from them?
  3. If you got your SF97 from GovPlanet did you also opt for their title service?
We opted for the GovPlanet SF97 + Title service but have yet to receive anythng. We were told up to 90 days before is comes in the mail.

So assuming we have a title - which by the way we were told will be from either Florida or I think Montana but I may be mistaken - so having the title in hand wouldn't we just go to the local DMS and get plates?

I bought my first M1097 summer of 2023 and had no issue with Oregon DMV. I did opt for the SF97, no title service, and had to take the truck in to get a VIN inspection at DMV. My serial number is also assigned to a Willy's jeep according to DMV but they had no problem giving me a title. I have it registered with SP plates and drive it a few times a month to keep it going. I work for a PD here in Oregon and echo what retiredwarhorses said, be a normal human and nobody is going to care. I didnt even know what the SP plate restrictions were until I had one myself.

You won't get a Florida title from Gov planet. They just don't do it.

The duplicate number also happened to me on 3 vehicles. In my case they just had to call the state of FL DMV and issue the same duplicate number with a note. One time was a boat, another time was a trailer and last time was some kind of small european antique car.
So, she explained to me, once the car is sold or registered again both numbers will show up but the person at the counter/computer must pick the right one.

@supr65 - Did you drive your HMMWV to the DMV to get it inspected, or trailer it /tow it?

You won't get a Florida title from Gov planet. They just don't do it.
@Gcelevator - We paid GovPlanet for the title service - an extra $200 if I recall correctly - and on the phone I asked if the title would be for my state, Oregon, and they told me they are all issued either from Florida or Montana. I don't think either matters since we will still need to get it for Oregon.

I drove mine to DMV but you can trailer it, they just have to physically see the serial number on the door. They didn't do any checks at all. You are correct about the out of state title, even if you have one you will still be required to bring the truck to DMV for the vin inspection.

They will also only register it with SP plates, and it took extra time for me since the DMV I visited had to send all of my paperwork (SF97 ect...) to Salem to have it reviewed. Maybe that was just me but I'd be prepared for a 120 day turnaround time.
