Anyone recognize this sudden noise on my CUCV?

Just heading up to my hunting stand in second gear in my M1009 and this sound suddenly rocked my day. U-joints and driveline seem fine. Lots of oil around transfer case, starter and bell housing. I was in 2-wheel hi. Not in 4 wheel at all. Engine restarted fluids in transmission seemed ok. Oil ok as well. I’m waiting on the tow truck. Any, any ideas on what I should look at? I appreciate anything that comes to mind.

Check the flexplate bolts and possibly a cracked flexplate.

Fly wheel maybe ?!?!

Sounds like a broken flexplate. If you're lucky.

I've also heard engines run like this when the crank has broken between mains. That's the unlucky option.

I agree with @patracy in that it's the flexplate or the crank. Pull your flexplate cover and get a good look at it. Is it scarred/scratched up?

My sons M1009 sounded similar, and it ended up being the crank. We're getting ready for an engine swap now.
