MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

Here's the follow-up and hopefully the end to this thread/PITA. Got the nice new mag (I thought a sweet price for $112 delivered), set my timing marks and installed it. Bang! Fired up quite nicely. So the problem that I created while trying to solve the problem that started this whole tale was...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

I'm trying to get my engine back and running, properly, right now. I found replacement condensers ($!@@ plus shipping!) but then found a NEW mag, $112 shipped. Figure I probably can't go wrong w/a new mag, which will have the internal gears timed right AND a new condenser. Hopefully that solves...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

FINALLY got it to fire up yesterday, though it took quite a bit of cranking to get it to catch. Guess I got the plastic gears inside the mag cap lined up right as I can now get the timing marks lined up correctly. So now I'm back to the original problem. I ran it under load for about 30 minutes...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

Thanx, Liftman. The thread on the 4A084 Engine Help doesn't really help, unless I'm still not getting something from that or the manual. The manual sez to wind the mag CW until it snaps, then wind it CCW until the timing mark on the mag hear will line up with the timing mark on the cam gear...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

Well, I 'fixed' it. Not in any kind of good way. No matter how many times I read the info on the mag and timing in TM 9-2805-259-14, and after countless times pulling the mag and governor trying to set the timing marks on the mag-and-camshaft gears and on the timing marks on the flywheel, I...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

Got into it this weekend, without a happy ending. First, check the simple things: was down 2 quarts (yeah, I know) of oil, thought MAYBE it's causing the low-oil sending unit to kill it when it gets hot cuz not enuf oil. Then, pulled the plugs in preparation for a compression check (cold, then...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

Thanx to all who've responded. Will be checking spark and compression after running (dying) and report back with my findings. Hope it's not some sensor or shutdown switch somewhere: I HATE looking for electrical gremlins, even more than I hate rebuilding engines. But neither is quite as bad as...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

Well, yes, I am in SoFla, very hot here now, and this thing, when it works, will run the whole house including central A/C. I have this connected to city gas (which is piped in LP, BTW, not natural) which also supplies the stove and water heater, so, if the big one hits, I can be comfortable...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

Thanx all for the advice. DieselBob: It dies either way: sometimes a slow death (gradual slow-down, then it quits), other times, it just shuts down. When it DOES die, it will crank (so I really don't think it's heat or valve related) but won't fire. I WILL try using the emergency position next...

MEP-018A: ol' reliable dying, advice sought.

OK, got my hands on this back in '05. Back in '09 the regulator fried and I replaced it with an electronic unit (see older posts). Have never had the need to use it but start and run it every month, under load. Recently, it's been either cutting out altogether, by first slowing down like it's...

    MEP018A Genset Regulator---fried

Yeah, this seems to do the trick. Amazing to me that this little box (it's a bit larger than a deck of cards) can do the job of that loaf-of-bread-sized beast that it replaces. And for substantially less than it's stock replacement. And is much more readily available than an original part. BTW...

    MEP018A Genset Regulator---fried

It's from MTS corp in Miami, got it there at the direction of one of the members here. Only $100. I popped the fuse on its board (don't know how but there seems to be a lot of gremlins in this unit) and after replacing that, seems to work fine.

    MEP018A Genset Regulator---fried

Okay, never posted pix here before, hope they show up. They really don't show the damage. Thanx to a fellow member, I replaced the dinosaur with a universal electronic regulator, did a few other minor (but PITA) repairs and I'm back in the generating biz.

    MEP018A Genset Regulator---fried

Took the beast out to test it and get it ready for the impending doom of hurricane season. This has always worked fine in the past w/o issues. Had a bit of trouble firing it up but got it up and running, and, as everyone sez, I have it set to run right up to speed--no idle. Anyway, had it run...
