I've read that the cam gear can be pulled with a decent three leg puller. That would be the route I'd go. That or find a diesel shop and throw money at them...
I may be losing oil there also... for sure it's a crack in the cover though. Plenty visible. Went to check the rear air compressor bracket bolts and much to my surprise, one broken, one missing and one loose as a goose! In the future checking these bolts at every oil change is a must.
Well well... diagnosing an oil leak lead me to the dreaded front gear case crack! She really started leaking bad a few months ago and yes, I did inspect my compressor support bracket about a year ago and it was intact and the bolts were tight. Craptastic! Not sure I have bandwidth to repair...

Well, I think you have a great plan and although I feel buying an lmtv that won't require a lot of work to make it drivable for less than $4000 is unlikely, with the right attitude nearly anything is possible. Lots to read here of course and he will learn plenty. These trucks do have some quirks...
