Question about climbing the Cajon Pass for the SoCal members

Thanks! That is what I was looking for. Assuming you have the same setup, about what rpm do you manually downshift?

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Well I can't really say that I did the work but a friend of mine who is an experienced welder/fabricator made this awesome receiver hitch for my 5 ton (the "Jolly Greenn"). Here are a few pics of the process and it in action. It still needs a few small things buttoned up but I think it came...

Question about climbing the Cajon Pass for the SoCal members

I live in Riverside, and have a 939A1 tractor (250 cummins/Auto). I have taken my 5 ton, the "Jolly Green" as it has been named, on a few trips now but will be taking it up to Mammoth over summer which will require a trip up the Cajon Pass. Now I fully expect to be putting along but can...

    931A1 axle seal question

Thanks for the guidance on the seals! That saves me a ton of time and mistakes. I will pull the instructions from the TM to make sure I don't ruin anything else while I'm in there.

    931A1 axle seal question

I recently bought an 931A1 w/ the super singles. She runs great but I noticed that I have a substantial axle seal leak that is allowing diff/gear oil to escape and spray while I drive leaving an interesting spray pattern on my tire. I tried to look at what seal/part # I need to buy in this...

Considering adding a 5 ton to the family and had a few ???

CommandoJeff, your idea for the AC is real close to mine. I am thinking of utilizing some of the storage/void space behind the cab or sleeper when I get it to mount the generator. I anticipate having a gooseneck hitch on the back of the truck so i will have to space the items out accordingly...

Considering adding a 5 ton to the family and had a few ???

Interesting that you suggest that as I had planned to install RV air powered by a generator so I could have AC whether in motion or while in the campground. For the soft top cabs, is there a hard top available in the case that you wanted something more secure and to protect against the weather?

Considering adding a 5 ton to the family and had a few ???

What AC option is available for $600? That sounds like a reasonable investment for AC in the truck. As I mentioned, I wanted to add an area for passenger, dog transport. I saw this shelter but I cant tell enough in the pics to see if the unit would mount on frame rails. It also looks like...

Considering adding a 5 ton to the family and had a few ???

I guess I need to clarify the top speed issue. The current laws and vehicle set up I have keeps me around 60-65 and it was my understanding that a 5 ton with either the 14/20 or 16/20 tire variety would allow a cruising speed of around 60MPH which is plenty for me as I like to keep it safe when...

Considering adding a 5 ton to the family and had a few ???

I have a rather newbie, “real world” based question for those that are much more familiar with these trucks than I am . I currently have the tow set up that is below and love it. However, I have had a few instances this year when 4wd (or 6wd) would have been helpful and I am realizing that I...
