I converted mine to 12 volt a few years ago. I think the reason I did is due to the fact that I needed a new starter and the cost was lower and the 12 volt starters were easy to come by . I am going to revert back to the 24 volt starter sooner or later.

Aside of the 12v conversion I did some time ago :
replaced flywheel
power steering pump and bracket
Starter bolt
starter bracket
new battery's
transmission service
turn signal switch
power steering belt
alternator belt
replaces glow plug
Had it all done for $1800.00 not too bad ...
