My recommendation is to stick with dexron as the hmmwv system is more complex than most others with the fanclutch, hydroboost, & power steering & winch (if equipped) sharing the same fluid. I don't think fluid caused your issue. Dexron III is backwards compatible with II and easy to find...
I think I am a patient person. I also try and do things logically spending only money when it needs to be spent. So, when I got the truck on the road last June and it was running above 210°. I decided to do the next step up cooling system modification. I installed the Heath Diesel 21"...
Under those conditions I would expect the fan to come on yes. Are you saying it comes on otherwise or only didn't during snow? During short intervals and low demand (low throttle) it might be clutched in and you can't hear it. The clutch allows the fan to be driven at engine RPM, a direct...
Is the bulb bad? some manufactures use the bulb as a sort of fuse, and when it goes, the electricity that you're piggy backing off of will not get power.
try to unplug all that wiring mess and see if it works then.
This is the final issue have on this Hmmwv just got a week ago. I installed the led taillight along with license plate with a light that connects in line with the taillight (I believe it was plug 21). Well, I reconnected everything the exact way the original light was connect on driver side but...

seems expensive at 180 bucks so here on SS IS the best deal out there

Infrared temp gun is your best friend.
from G503:
There are 2 temperature sensors in the HMMWV. One is on the left side of the block behind the alternator. This one drives the temp gauge.
The other one is in the water crossover manifold on the top of the engine. This one controls the fan...
I had posted a while back that my Cadillac valve was not functioning so I bought a NOS replacement from a fellow SS member. Once replaced and system bled, upon start up the fanclutch blew PS fluid everywhere. I replaced the fanclutch, bled the system and again another fanclutch sprays PS...
Unless you can demonstrate that you've done it, I'm calling bulls hit on this one...
In fact, give me a couple of weeks and I'll be able to demonstrate that this will not work: I'll put a hmmwv on towbars and drag it with the transmission in gear. It won't start.
The red dot kit comes with a new water pump pulley so a 5th belt runs to power the compressor.

If you're doing all that work, may as well pull out the gutless turd of a 6.2 and put in a Cummins 5.9 or 6.7. The G56 would then be the transmission of choice....
End result would be a conservative 650hp and 900lbs/ft of torque. I wonder what piece of the driveline would break first...
Hi, this is actually my first reply on here. I too have pondered installing a manual transmission on my 1991 hmmw. I still have much research to do, but so far I have read on various forums that a gm transmission will bolt to the engine. I know there will need to be a clutch assembly installed...
Forgive my ignorance, but didn't the HMMWV's have TH400's in them? And to best of my knowledge they're set up for deep fording. At least I've seen video's of the Military doing so in training.
On my HMMWV it's like this: Follow the hoses from the Cadillac valve (yours might not say Cadillac on it, mine doesn't because it was not made in Cadillac MI). One hose will go into the front firewall on the driver side of the vehicle, and if you look into the fan shroud on that spot you can...
Hello,
I'm relatively new to this site, so go easy on me...lol
I bought a M998 a few months ago, it had some mechanical issues one of which was that the power steering pump had been partially removed...basically no belts and loose bolts. So I figured somebody was in the middle of changing out...
True, I started driving farm tractors early on, tractors actually have a left and right brake for this purpose.
But that's why in a HMMWV there is an option to lock the differential? I think it's the "L" selection on the left shifter?
Or does that only work while the automatic transmission is...
In my mind(The mind of the criminally insane):
1. I would use an infrared thermometer your gauge may be reading wrong.
2. All M998's have the aux clutchfan, I thought. Later versions, have differing belt configurations. All should have the clutchfan, I think. (I don't know of a HMMWV...
Bleeding the system will magically fix your problem [if you didn't also damage the pump from letting it run partially dry]. After doing work on the cooling fanclutch in my HMMWV, I had a pretty sizeable air pocket in my system. The power steering would squeal, was heavy-handed, and I'm sure...
