Sorry, I wasn't thinking when you asked the question before. I am looking at replacing the drums and shoes with a caliper and rotor. I had looked into pinion brakes before, but the disadvantage is that they are really meant for offroad use only and I plan on driving mainly on paved roads. But...
I was planning on following the build thread found here: https://www.tgwforums.com/post?id=5154598&trail=20
I believe he is mounting them to the pinion input.
Also looking at Gearhart Engineerings kits, I am using a different rotor than he is, as well as swapping the dual piston calipers for 4...
So I haven't worked on it further yet, but I do plan on working on this over winter. But what I need to do is cheat the calipers over slightly and I should have enough clearance for the studs
I am looking at swapping my 5 ton axles over to disc brakes. After doing a lot of research on this forum and on the internet in general I was able to figure out which rotors/pads/calipers I needed for the swap. On an old thread I saw someone say that instead of using F550 calipers that it would...
It is somewhat of an old school monster truck build, so I don't see it ever needing highway speeds, but most roads around me are 55mph though I would not be driving that in 4x4. From my understanding the T138 and T1138 are tcases from a 5 ton, and they won't handle the output of the 8v92. I will...
I am building a truck and am trying to figure out what transfer case I should go with for the build. I have an 8v92TA Detroit backed up by an Allison HT740 transmission. For the wheels I have 16r20 Michelin XL's and 5 ton Rockwells for the axles. Initially I was going to use a 2.5 ton transfer...
Since starting this thread I have been able to acquire the wheel lock nuts, the o-rings and new valve stems. I’m currently finding a set of metal bead locks before I get started piecing everything together. I’ve been looking over the sight to find the torque for the wheel lock nuts and have seen...
That’s what I was thinking but the guy I got the tires from said they had to be run with tubes, and I live an hour from the sand dunes so I might be airing down the tires if I brought the truck there
Okay, Caiman’s are they type for the rims, and thanks gringeltaube for the link to those nuts. Should I be looking at getting rubber bead locks to replace the tubes in the tires, or would I be better off running the tubes instead?
Recently I picked up a set of 16.00r20 Michelin XL's to mount on my truck. I have these aluminum rims for the tires to be mounted to. The tires came with tubes and liners. Due to the type of rims I believe I should be getting a beadlock and setting the tubes and liners aside. I was hoping...
So to start off, I am putting 5 ton axles underneath a 1947 Ford 2 1/2 ton truck. The axles are non-air axles. I am looking to upgrade the brakes from drums to a lighter alternative. I was originally thinking of doing a pinion brake, but reading the forums here suggests that's not a good option...
At this point it looks like I will be going with the 6v53. The owner shows me that it runs and drives, and is willing to sell me the entire tractor with the motor in it. So I will be able to part the tractor out to lower the cost. The guy who owns the 8v71 told me hes been robbing parts off of...
I am looking at getting a different motor for my truck. It is a 1947 that has a flathead v8 in it. I want to replace it with an old two stroke Detroit Diesel. So far I have found an 8v71 and a 6v53. I know both motors are getting up there in years. I was wondering if anyone could tell me good or...
Yes I do, the truck has 8.80 low range and 6.40 high range gearing in the 2 speed rear end. The 2 speed is broken so its stuck in high range, but unless I really load the truck down I won't really need to use the low range. Plus the flathead will be going from 85 horse to 100 horse plus whatever...
Actually the current rear axle actually weighs more than the 5 ton rear axle, the big weight difference is going to come from the tires, front axle, flatbed, and transfer case. I am going to use a tcase out of a 2.5 ton truck because of the weight of the 5 ton tcase. And I'm going with military...
Or by deuce axles do you 2 1/2 ton axles? If so, because I have seen a lot of 2 1/2 ton axles break so I figured I start out bigger rather than upgrading down the line.
Because I paid 500 bucks for the pair of axles, which is a steal around me as they normally go for 1500 or more. And yes it is a flathead v8 8BA 239, currently being torn apart to make into a 304 stroker.
Thanks for all the input, tobyS I sent you a message. As for the unsprung weight, I'm not to terribly worried about it as its not going to effect the overall weight rating, because the State police told me that since there isn't a weight load associated with my truck being that its 70 years old...
