Ok, went out and braved the heat for a bit to pull apart the hoist motor. Motor runs both directions with little noise when free from the gearing.
Pulled the cover off the bull gear casing, and besides being half full of water and oil, everything looks ok in there too. So, might be the drum...
Jerry, I've got the straps to end all straps. Bwhahahahhaaaha!
Plus if I can come up with a winch drive shaft, and some frame extentions, I'll have my winch on the 818 of death by GA.
I'm going to pull the hoist and swing motors today, to check things out. In the TM, that's the only troubleshooting for those systems- motor turns, replace hoist/turntable gear. Motor doesn't turn, replace motor. That's all it says.
Ruppster, that must be your site I've been going to all the time for d600 info for my 1975 fuel truck! I agree, those trucks have become quite rare. Luckily mine is in super good shape body wise, needs a windshield though.

B. Because they don't know any better or don't care and have an unsafe/under insured/under licensed driver/under tagged truck.
C. you can go through one day and be stopped, the guys come out, look...
I pulled about 290,000lbs of locomotive and loaded stone cars once...
When I moved from VA to SC I pulled a m146 trailer with a dolly behind the deuce, 39,000lbs total. But all axles had good working brakes, and most of the weight I put in the back of the deuce. would do 55mph on the flats, but...
Like Clint said, totally unreliable.
People will have mechanical trouble, commit to doing something they know they can't, or won't do, blah blah blah. I said earlier I was bringing 6 trucks. Right now 2 are not drivable, and there is only me and the wife. So I will strive to bring 6, if I can...
