Looking at a Deuce, Has Some Issues

The Army has been using DOT 5 brake fluid for at least 20 years. Some trucks have a decal near the master cylinder telling you that. DOT 3 and 5 don't mix.

New to 5 ton what is the model of this one

White smoke when running ? This may indicate coolant leaking into the combustion chamber and being burned with the fuel. Take the cap off the expansion tank and see if the engine is blowing bubbles within which would suggest a blown head gasket.

    M-52 Recovery

The fuel transfer pump is mounted between the battery box and the passenger's side fuel tank. As the pump will pump the fuel over faster than the engine burns it you need to run for a while to make room in the left tank and then start the pump. Set the fuel gauge for the right tank and shut then...

    M-52 Recovery

The 5th wheel pic in post 20 shows the wedges that keep the 5tth wheel from oscillating in highway service are in backwards as the narrow end goes under the trunnion bar on the fifth wheel. Also there is a second fuel pump for these trucks which pumps the fuel in the right tank over to the left...

    What trailer is this?

If you are going to use it on road I hope the data plate with the VIN is still attached to the drawbar. Road used will also probably involve attention to the tires, brakes, and lights. If the seller wants to include the "arch" in the pic it is probably worth $500.00. I have seen descent M105s go...

    Questions about M720 and brakes

Remember, the USDOT standard, which has been adopted by reference in many states to keep the highway trust $ coming in, requires some type of operational brake, hydraulic, air, electric or what have you, for any towed device RATED for over 3000# gvw, not what it weighs empty. Post 12 has an...

    First M37...........and hello!!

Grease is cheap Parts cost money. Be guided accordingly. Grease is of special necessity in a vehicle with manual steering. Get the applicable lubrication order as some of the check/fill plugs are unusual.

    Newbie With a 1984 M923 - So many questions...

Caging pins are used to cut out the parking brake to prevent it from engaging when the vehicle has to be towed and no air is available from the towing vehicle to keep the brake released. Super singles ? be prepared to replace at least 6 wheels and tires. If the wheels you get are stud piloted...

    Inspect your MV's....

Reference post 6: throw a driveshaft out of a M35 is a character building experience. The flaying shaft will clean of the chassis in a twinkle: brake lines, electric wires, all gone. ASnd if it is a rear shaft, no handbrake either.

Need a 6x6 Road Tractor in Central Florida

Think about getting a winch truck to lift the front and some kind of rough terrain forklift to lift the back as the resistance set up by dragging the back will be intense. I know this because I used to winch CONEX boxes onto a landoll trailer and the best way to do that was get the front up on...

    part time fire truck

Remember the NFPA has reported the major cause of LODD in apparatus is tanker roll overs. If you operate on extreme terrain some thought should be given to rollover prevention and protection.

    Newbie Curious What I Missed

If you have not already done so, while you are accumulating parts also accumulate the pubs: operators manual, organizational maintenance manual, parts book, lubrication order. These can be found in the TM section on this site and in digital or paper format elsewhere.\Don't make a move without...

    Lets talk offroad upgrades .....

Don't forget a valuable accessory for any truck with a winch is a snatch block and an anchor chain. At least 1 of each. The Army OVM authorization for a vehicle with a winch includes 1ea snatch block, anchor chain, and if equipped with a shear pin, a hammer and punch to change out the shear...

Small under powered pickup meets its replacement

Post 4: was it empty ? I remember trying to drive one loaded with a M105 hanging on the back and it was dead on its feet. You could become dead when it shifted ranged and either caved in your skull on the back of the cab or threw you against the windshield when it downshifted. We regretted...

The air cleaner is a non stock item liberated from a 5 ton. Deuces have the stock air cleaner under the hood in the right rear corner of the engine compartment.

New to 5 ton what is the model of this one

Winch disconnected ? Did you get a chance to ask the previous owner why ? Keep unauthorized and untrained users from messing with it ? Hydraulic problem ? Mechanical problem ? A working winch can be a useful item in an area described as being more rugged than combat.

Will a M274 fit into a M101A2 or A3 trailer and will the tailgate close???

If you go with a M105, do you have something to pull it that will operate the brakes ? A M105 is heavy enough to require operational brakes empty. They come with air brakes to be compatible with a M35. Some have converted them to electric brakes but you need something.
