I'm pretty sure it is the same gasket as a gas engine uses for the distributor.

You do not need to re-engineer the battery terminal setup.
Just use and maintain it correctly and keep your batteries in position(retained).
Also just to state it, there are positive and negative terminals. They are not interchangeable.
Rapid clicking of the glowplug relay is an indication of failed glow plugs(the system is designed to do this).
Test all 8 glow plugs.
As for your starter, it sounds like you need to drop and test it.
Food for thought, when the alternator looses battery connection it will go to full output.
That will assist with the damage to the terminals. It will also kill your voltage regulator.
