What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Ohh, man... Sorry for your loss.. Such horrible shape... I'll be by around 1900 with a trailer to take it off your hands for you to save you the trip to the junkyard. Don't wory about the fuel. I'll cover that too...

    Are 6TL Batteries worth it?

Lifepo4 isn't designed for that current draw. They do make 'starter' Lifepo4 but they're still not up to snuff - there are also issues with charging below 32F, and USAGE below 0F. Charging below 32F can cause permanent damage - decent batteries have either a low temp cutoff or a built in heater...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Project Farm did a review on penetrating fluids. This blew everything else out of the water. I was a huge Kroil fan but now buy this stuff and it seems to work a lot better.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I like this. Here in the states we just replace entire units. We have a culture of replacing instead of repairing. The 'art of repair' is something that's lost on the vast majority of this and the previous (my) generation. Even mechanics these days will just throw parts at the problem instead...

I've seen JBLM range control vehicles painted like that. Still weird though. How long ago did you pick it up? GL or GP?

Really frustrated. .M1010 and questionable work

At the time, I was working 60-80 hour weeks, I can't remember exactly but I had either just started living in it or had already given notice to my landlord that I was going to be moving out, so I didn't have time, or energy, to deal with it.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Yeah, like working on stuck pickle jar lid and you hand it to your 7 year old to humor them and he pops it right off after you've been struggling for the last 2 minutes with all your strength to get it off. Yeah, it was that. Lots of head scratching and cussing - then just thankful it was off.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

I gave up and had someone else do it.. .rofl We ended up alternating between heat, and soaking it with penetrating fluids of various types. We knew if we broke the bolt off it wasn't going to be fun, and near impossible to drill out. Bent a 1/2" 3ft breaker bar. We were debating if a sawzall...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Break out the TM. I'm going off memory here, but.... Disconnect jack shaft/drive shaft Remove fluid lines Remove shift line Remove pressure regulator line Remove 1 or 2 electrical plugs (trans temp I think) Remove vent line Remove trans support bar rotate engine to get bolts out of flywheel...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Tranny swap is pretty darn easy on these trucks. Last one I did took about 6 hours total - and probably an hour or 2 of that was fighting a bolt in one of the driveshafts.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

If it's rubber, replace it. If it's electrical, clean it and grease it. 😁

Really frustrated. .M1010 and questionable work

Can't believe I didn't update this a decade ago.... Shop is H&H Diesel. The guy they had working on my truck was a new guy, and he actually came to me when I came to pick up the truck, after I paid. He explained they put him on it, KNOWING he didn't know anything about it, as a 'here, go...

Tire suggestions for daily driver - M923A2

Just to bring this back up - it seems like 1600s are coming back into stock in a lot of places with decent tread and date codes. What issues will you have with articulation off road with such a large tire?

CUCV early Glow Plug burn out - What is the cause?

There are 2 isss There are 2 issues with the mechanical lift pump. One, is the alignment issue you mentioned - I fought that myself when replacing mine. The other issue is getting the plunger/rod to stay in the right place - A gob of grease will make it easier. You CAN run an electric lift...

    Super single or duals?

Yup. Even some of the value branded stuff has some decent capability these days. I remember the first battery powered drills were drills in name only - really couldn't use them for anything more than a glorified electric screwdriver. Good luck trying to get a nut off or driving a wood screw...

    Super single or duals?

M18 high torque impact (or the Dewalt version, if you're a yellow guy). I have a 3/4 that's rated to like 2100 ft lbs and takes lug nuts off a 5 ton with zero issue - I think I paid $250? They also make a 1" - full handle and all - and that's I wanna say 2500 ft lb.... but also 2-3x the price...
