    Best Antifreeze/ coolant for M1165a

Some engine manufacturers want sodium nitrite in the coolant to prevent liner cavitation. These are the HOAT coolants. If you have a Caterpillar dealership nearby buy their ELC coolant. It is a HOAT. You will not find an IAT coolant at an automotive parts store. If for some reason you want to...

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

The Nox-Rust product is a newer technology based on gelled calcium sulfonate. It resembles a wax or bitumen coating but it is not. The gelled calcium sulfonate coatings are not oily so they don't mess with painted surfaces but they also don't soak into crevices like the Fluid Film products do.

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

The epoxy zinc on blasted metal is by far the best route but if you're patching up you're existing coatings under your truck there is a product from Daubert called Nox-Rust 121B. This is the "wax" coating used by GM on some of their frames. It's suitable for marginally prepared surfaces. It's...

    water in engine

We do oil samples in our fleet because we can show them to auditors. The like to see them but they don't provide much value to us as operators. Coolant samples are much more preventative but it's very hard to convince the oil is the most important fluid establishment that this is the case. Your...

    water in engine

It's very hard to start a diesel engine after water ingestion. A recent example I had was a Cat C9. The water cooled aftercooler failed and fogged the engine with so much water the engine shut down. I hired the local Cat dealer to replace the aftercooler which they did but could not get the...

    water in engine

Your glow plugs were bad. That's what probably caused the no-start.

    water in engine

Just back the plug off a few threads. If there is water in the pan it will drip water first. Don't bother with oil samples. You don't have time. The goal here is to get the engine started as soon as possible. Crack the drain plug and pull the glow plugs.

    Piston Rings

For piston rings in general, it appears that the bevel should be on the top unless the ring has a tapered face.

    Resistor

24V DC has a tendency to weld switches and relays shut.

    water in engine

Whatever you do, work fast. Get the engine running ASAP to stop the corrosion. Important, before you start cranking with the starter crack the drain plug. If you've got water there you'll want to change the oil first.

    “84 M1009 electrical/ignition problems

Resistors NEVER fail in a mode that causes full voltage to pass through. If you are getting full voltage through that means all of your glow plugs are dead.

    “84 M1009 electrical/ignition problems

Sounds like your batteries are dead. How did bypassing the glow plug resistor solve your problem? Did you install 24v glow plugs.l?

    Opinion on air filters?

The performance ratings aren't usually published for air filters, that makes it difficult to compare brands. Napa, Wix, AC Delco, Hastings, etc... all tend to sell decent filters. I am not a fan of Fram, Champ, and K&N from experience. I would be hesitant to install a $2 air filter. Even Fram...

    Opinion on air filters?

Yes but your 6.2 might experience valve recession from the extra dirt passed by the inexpensive filter. Air filters are not an item to cheap out on. I put a Donaldson PowerCore on mine when I did the turbo conversion. You can see daylight through the filter in the picture of the cheap one.

    Gen 1 Issue?

There is an important ground strap to the block. It's behind the fuel filter housing off the passenger cylinder head. I forgot to reconnect it once. My brake lines were smoking during the glow plug cycle.

    Charging issue

A 100 amp alternator will take about 45 minutes to fully charge a dead battery. I would start your diagnostics first by fully charging your batteries, 12.6 volts. Put them in the truck and start it. They should immediately jump to 14+ volts if the alternators are working. If the batteries are...

Anti friction tire substance… Medical Ultrasound Gel???

I guess it's a little more complicated than the gel I use for ultrasonic thickness gauging.

Anti friction tire substance… Medical Ultrasound Gel???

Ultrasound gel is glycerin if I am not mistaken.

    How to fireproof magnesium parts?

It takes a very involved fire to get magnesium going. The vehicle would already be a total loss by the time the magnesium starts burning.

    Using thicker oil

How hard is it to drop the pan on the engine? One could plastigage the bearings. If they're found to be worn, roll in a new set.
